NW Ranger

That is the production version. We took photos of the prototype for the website. They will be corrected on the SOG site shortly.

So they all will have grooves on the crossguard?

Why !!! :(

Do you still have some of the prototype?

I figure the knife was ready, nicely made for realistic daily use and at the last moment the marketing department got a look at it.
Wait it's still a tactical knife!
Tactical knives need a lot of grooves, grooves are very important, grooves would sell better!
Not much room to place them? Well let's put them on the guard.

I still can't believe they would mes up a perfectly good knife (I was very glad it had lost the serrations)

I don't quite understand the need for those grooves. I don't commonly find myself needing extra grip on that surface of any crossguard.

On the contrary, if you're working with the knife your index finger will move a bit against the crossguard.
In a rule crossguards are made very smooth in order to not create any hotspots.
Putting grooves on the guard is making a grasp for your index finger.
If this was needed it was incorporated in general knife design for a long time.
The fact this isn't a common feature, says enough.

I think those grooves are there for looks and don't care if they are there. Looks to me as if they won't get in the way. Am planning to get one this summer reguardless. But if it's a consern to you, I hope SOG can work something out.

I have ordered one. As for the cross guard grooves...hey, I've got a dremel tool and a bench grinder. Its not like I have not modified knives before.

I still might buy one and let it also modify, but it add costs.
(Knifemakers aren't doing it for free + 2 x extra shipping costs)

Get yourself a file at the hardware store. It adds to the fun when you work on your own stuff.

OK, I got one...plain edge, Tini finish. The grooves on the guard are nothing to worry about. They don't add performance but they don't get in the way either. It is a nice knife, light weight and well balanced with a very comfortable handle. I think that the blade geometry may make this a better all-arounder than my seal pup elite. Both knives weigh about the same.

Neo, PM or e-mail me at darrell.kaiser@us.army.mil, I have a solution for you.

Didn't checked this threat until today :o

In the end I bought one for 50$ (added it to a nice shipment from the us :D )
Unlike rramjet the grooves do bother me.
In a couple of weeks I' m going to get some custom knives from a maker and being at his place I'm gonna ask him if he would grind the guard just like the Russian version. ;)
A bit of a pity because a guard is nice when you "choke up" on the knife :(
