I just returned from the NY Custom Show and wanted to give everyone a full report. Jerry asked me to stand in for him after some large military orders made it impossible for him to attend.
Frankly, I secretly wondered if the Sept 11 disaster would make the NY Show poorly attended. I could not have been more wrong - the show was heavily attended and the Busse table was often three and four deep (as Dark Nemesis and others have already reported). Interest in the new customs was so strong that Jerry had to send more for early AM delivery on Saturday and even though Jerry did not have time to sharpen or laser etch them - we still SOLD OUT !!
I think everyone felt the same way I did - sole authorship pieces by Jerry are going to be very popular and certain to appreciate in value. Jerry complained several times to me how his wrist injury has really bothered him these last few weeks so I really don't expect many of these new models to be see the light of day.
Anyway, the most popular by far were the Crazy Heart, the "Flying Tiger" (sister to the Crazy Heart but with front serrations) and the Bolo Re-curve (which is so new that it has yet to be named - oops, do I hear a contest starting Jerry?!). The Bad Apples also sold out - the first of course going to none other but - yup, you guessed it - Dark Nemesis.
The new BAT tip is fantastic!! Not only does it look great but it is super functional as it reinforces the strength of the point significantly. And I would be remiss if I did not mention the interest that the new fighter - the Internal Affair generated. When comparing it to the Battle Mistress it was like putting a C-130 transport plane up against a Stealth fighter. Just imagine 10 inches of steel (same length as the BM) in under 10 ounces of weight!! And all INFI, of course! Remarkable.
Saturday was also well attended and we were busy as ever. I had not planned to spend all day Sunday at the show, but since I basically had nothing to show or sell anyway, we wound up closing up the table for good on Saturday night!! The time just flew by and many thanks to all who stopped by including Dark Nemesis, Nakano, Lou B (the Martial Way), etc., etc. It was great meeting all you guys!!
Also, I enjoyed the stories on why you love Busse knives - such as the archeologist who uses Busses on all his dig sites, and the carpenter (sorry, can't remember your name) who brought and used his Busse at the World Trade Center 'Ground Zero' site (even though he had dozens of knives to choose from) as he volunteered for two weeks worth of duty, etc., etc.
Anyway, I am exhausted, but if I can help any of you find what you are looking for, just drop me an email !! In the interim, I am yours in -
