NY knife laws

Damn! Just added one more reason to my list of why to stay the hell away from NYC. That sucks! Our criminal justice system really seems to be going down hill and gaining speed. These laws only seem to affect the good hard working honest people. The thugs are going to do it anyway and if and when they get busted more than likely some judge will just smack them on the hand and tell them not to do it again. Write your Senator, Congressman, Govenor, Mayer, Etc. Hell give me the address and I'll throw in my two cents. Although they probably throw all complaints from Kentucky right in the garbage.

Are there any concealed weapons permits available there? I understand you probably do not want to conceal, but that may be the answer. Just my opinion.

Gene: a CCW in NYC? That' s hilarious. Unless one has big $ which = influence which= "privileged" class. This is just one form of discrimination in the licensing dept.

Boriqua: Unfortunately our current Queens DA is a man(?) named Hynes, who is anti- gun/ anti- self defense and will not hesitate for a split second to make an example out of an honest law abiding citizen for personal and political reasons. He is no better than our current US State Senators. Nuff said!

Hey Nakano:
I dig it. Bottom line is we have to take responsibility for ourselves. That is why I know the knife codes but I carry what I want. Truth is I have for a long time and as long as you dont draw unneeded attention to yourself (ie. That kill em all shirt) you can be happily left alone. Its not to say that random stops dont happen but there are a whole lot of people in ny and chances are slim.

I have updated the page to include information regarding State laws.
You know what After reading it twice I think there are still to many holes you can get stuck in. I couldnt find a proper definition of dirk or dagger but the search continues

OK I'm confused...what I get from reading the statutes is that a 3" fixed blade is OK, but it is not OK to display it in public...Does this mean that it should be carried CONCEALED??!!!

Other ?'s are ...How is the blade measured? From the tip down the sharpened edge? Down to the handle? Around the edge?

Keep up the good work!

Hey Mb
I think that the NY (CITY) laws are clear enough about the length but say nothing about type. I even went as far as to post on my site presumtions. When the state government says that it can be assumed the item was carried in an unlawful manner and it doesnt really address enough to say what "intent to us in an unlawful manner" is. So yea your question does really remian unanswered. For arguments sake in front of my ?!peers?! I would assume that certain instruments are bone illegal unless you fall under one of the catagories of exemption. Now Im not a lawyer so Im just using common sense and I will not assume that the government uses any. I could very well be 100% wrong but that is what I walked away with.
Ebbtide:
Reads to me like you hit it. Unlawful to carry "(any) knife with an exposed or unexposed blade." Sounds to me like its ok to carry a knife that has a blade that is 3 and 7/8 as long as noone sees it. Knife people will measure the knife's blade as cutting edge but every police man that I know measures penetration ability which would mean to the handle. I guess it could be argued in court since none of the information mentions how to measure. Thats what I mean they surely did leave a lot of open spaces. Hmmmmm. If they want people to follow the rules though shouldnt they be clear cut enough for everyone to understand. Here we are grown men and collectively its hard to come up with any definite answers.
