anyone know of an online resource for new york state knife laws ? I live outside the city in Orange Co.

According to the NYS Penal Code, all "dangerous knives" are prohibited. This term is not defined anywhere, thus vague and open to interpretation by the ignorant who fear all knives.

Amen brotha! 100% true. Unfortunately there are too many Cops still fearful of knives and they will often Interpret any "tactical" knife as worthy of either confiscation, arrest or both.

I have some horror stories on that issue.

When your wearing a vest that will stop a bullet (hopefully) but a knife can easily slice through, it tends to make you somewhat fearful of knives, if anyone can argue that point, please do.

But in the situations people are speaking of here I think its more or less when someone is stopped and they have a knife on their person, not that they have it exposed/open.

Are bad judgement calls about knives made? Yes, and people talk about them and they become stories passed down about some jerk cop that took my knive that I use for work or whatever.

Just like with many things in the NYPD and Police departments all over, the bad things get magnified and the good things get swept under the rug. A cop that runs into a burning building and saves 3 kids is a hero for a day. That same cop takes someones knive and he's a jerk now.

On that, ever wonder how many times a person is stopped and they do have a knife on their person and are honest about it, and the officer in fact lets them go with the knife? Thats probably not given much thought, cause no one passes those stories down or comes on the internet to post about them.

Its all the bad experiences that people talk about. And don't get me wrong, as I said, knifes are often taken when they should not be. But at least remember that there is a lot of times that they are not.

Well said. I bet you there are probably more good situations than bad.

Three years ago, I was hunting in NY States Adirondacks Mountains. In the evening, I left the woods and drove to an out of the way diner to eat. I was tired and still had on my camo. bibs with my bowie attached to my leg. I walked into the diner and past three LEOs who looked at me and went back to their dinner. I didn't even realize that I had my knife on me. Not one of them took a second look.

Charles, I think up that far the laws are slightly different and as long as you are hunting and the knife is sheathed you are safe. Not positive about that though.

PhoneLine, well put. But I do have a few horror stories of knife confiscation, arrest and for (by Law) totally legal knives. Not for me but for a couple friends.

However, in the one time that I was questioned by Detectives and about to be searched I offered up the two knives prior to search. They were actually very pleased and were totally accomodating after that. They were two older DT's who've probably had their fill of knives and we ended up discussing knives and martial arts.

NYC laws are very grey and it is too often left up to judgement calls.

Charles , that reminds me of a time when I was at a gas station here in the Catskills .A few of us were standing there including a trooper. A car full of city hunters arrived .As they stepped out of the car they saw the trooper and made a mad dash to hide a hunting knife. We all laughed , the trooper too !!

I just went shopping at the Broadway Mall in Hicksville (Nassau LI) and watched two plain cloths officers stop three teenagers ( for an unkown reason) and remove a knife from one of the kids. They tried flicking it open and they got it to flick open and put the cuffs on the kid and in the back of the car he went. It did not seem that the kids had done anything serious, but one of them will now have a criminal charge on his record. Not a good thing to see as a knife collector as it did not appear these kids were causing any trouble, and they were all clearly fearful and respectful of the officers.....

Ouch, that hurts (no pun intended).

I don't hear much about storing the knives in ones home. NYC law does talk about posession, but I interpret that as on you when you are out and about. I would assume that if you can transport a large knife to and from a hunting trip, then obviously you will storing it in your home.

Any thoughts on this?

I may be wrong but in in NYC - you cannot have a knife on you if you are under 16 yrs. of age. Depending on the age of the kids, maybe that is why he was picked up. Just a guess.

In NY possession carries for both in your house and on your person. In the case of a unlicensed pistol it is spelled out that it is a Class A misd in your house and a Felony on your person. Possession means your have custody and control over the item. It is all in the NYS Penal Law. In your house, and a hunting license is good for most knives. There would have to be a reason why they are searching your house and find them. As for age, that maybe a part of it but kids under 16 can't carry the all elusive "dangerous knives" ....but they can carry a "knife"
