ok so im looking to buy a pocket knife and was wondering if a lock back with a tanto blade and thumb stud like a benchmade stryker or microtech mini socom would fall into the "dangerous knife" catagory because of the blade, also i know carrying a switchblade is illegal but is owning one illegal too in NY state.

Quick answer is that a Tanto blade is almost always considered a weapon type blade, and that knife tends to flick open easily therefore making it a gravity knife unless you keep the blade tight. As for switchblades and gravity knives, if can own them only if you have a fishing-hunting-or trapping license, or you are a LEO. ( NYSPL sec 265.20 except #6)
