This is probably nothing new to those of you that travel a lot but maybe it's worth mentioning to those of us that don't.
Of 4 times booking NY hotel rooms through discount internet agents 2 times the hotels tried the swindle of insisting they have no rooms at that price and
they're booked full.
I had printout of the deal both times and refused to back down and got my room and rate.
It has also happened to me in Mystic Connecticut and Newport Rhode island.
Be careful if you're coming in from out of town for the first time.

I'm a cheap son of a gun when it comes to hotel rooms and knife shows.Spend my money on knives not rooms.
They could be giving free custom knives at the door at the NY show and I would not go to it because of the price of a hotel.
Plenty of shows elsewhere.

Rant off

There are plenty of cheap hotels or motels to stay in when in NY. Yous just need to know where to look, which isn't online. They probably won't even take reservations, you won't need them, or have any fancy things like clean sheets.

But it is possible to find a cheap room to stay in for the show if you want. Or you could always take a quick subway ride into one of the other boroughs, such as Queens, and find a place much cheaper.

He's right. Never stay in the City, it will kill your budget. The idea is to stay in Queens and take the Long Island RR. It's only about a 30 min. trip and fairly cheap. Save the money for the knives.

I found rates $100 cheaper uptown and took a 5 minute subway ride to Bway..
I know other people that have stayed as far away as Stamfort CT. but that's overkill.

Sometimes convenience is the name of the game. But I wouldn' t stay in the show hotel at their rates either. There are a few other hotels in the near vicinity of the NY show this coming March which have considerably lower rates. Howard Johnsons for one, comes to mind. And as Erik D. already mentioned, no reservations necessary.

be careful I'd never go into NY with no reservation
It's risky I've seen rooms very scarce and you always get a lower rate over the net- especially at ho jo i've stayed there

I think that visiting NYC on a budget requires survival skills no less than a hike through the Crazy Woman mountains in Montana. You just need different survival skills.

Check out bed & breakfasts online . Don't be afraid to stay in an outer borough or NJ, near a commuter line. Transpotation is chheap and excellent in NYC, take advantage of that. Also, there are so dam' many restaurants that good food can be found on the cheap.

TowW is correct--don't come in with no reservation, you will end up paying a lot just to get off your feet. Plan ahead, just like you would for a hike in the wilderness.

Does that mean that if I live in NYC, then I'm a sort of NYC mountain man? Heehee, suddenly I feel much more self reliant.

All great advice, except if you rarely/never travel to NY, why not experience it a bit instead of trekking out to the burbs every night?

There are some decent NYC travel deals out there and NYC has the finest restaurants in the world at every price point. Enjoy it while you are there!

The 9/11 area is also worth paying homage to as well as some of the other great landmarks.

Bring your spouse/sig other and let them go shopping!

On a real tight budget, stay in queens by the airport for $79 and spend all of your free time in Manhattan and take the train back at night.

Tom,
There's generally a couple clean places on the upper W side which go for under $80 if you're willing to share a bathroom (not unlike some b&b's). Not a bad place to stay and you're in the city - easy access to Central Park, Museums and a good, but do-able walk to the show site.

I grew up in NYC, and live about 90miles N now. For what it's worth, my wife and I have had good luck using Expedia - generally find something around $150 and we haven't had a problem with check in. Of course, being a native - I always go up to the counter with a loaded gun pointed at the clerk...
Good luck,
Steve

Grapevine if you live in NY you already have skills far beyond those of a mountain man. god bless you

I keep reading that hotel business nationwide is starting to boom because of more folks travelling, which makes for scarcity and higher prices. NY is definitely on that list.
