Taking you up on your suggestion Irv....

Here are a couple of knives I've found so far, any info would be great!

The first is a New York Worlds Fair knife tagged "SYRACUSE KNIFE CO. SYRACUSE N.Y. U.S.A. on the tang.

The second is a advertising knife marked E.H. BEST & CO. BOSTON.MASS. on one side of the handle and WOOLENS. FELTS. on the other side. The tang of the main blade is marked "Hammer Brand" with a picture of an arm holding a hammer. The tang of the second smaller blade is tagged New York Knife Co. Walden. Mind that I have 2 of these so it leads me to believe that someone didn't just slap a different blade on the knife.

We just did a thread on these Aluminum knives ( your blades are correct ) someone will advise how to find the thread. Phil you I believe started that thread. The syracuse can be found in Levine or Goins. Which if you are going to catalogue knives you should have a copy of. It is easy to find and I am a bit pressed for time so I am sure someone will give you the dates. LT

Here's a pic of my pair of aluminum handled advertisers. Same as LT's although I'm looking for more, especially one with the Schrade Cutlery Mark.

I didn't have to go far for info on the EH Best company, as my financee is from Boston and recalls shopping at that store with her mother (seems to have been a 'dry goods' type place. I couldn't find anything on the web about it. We have other members from the Boston area here at the forum, maybe they remember something. Artifacts from the era where woolen mills thrived in New England.

My EH Best knife is tang marked exactly as yours. The second knife shown is an advertiser for Knox Woolens, or Maine, which I described in the thread linked to above. It is in perfect Mint condition.

SYRACUSE KNIFE CO dates from the 1930s. It was a Camillus brand, I guess a lower dollar knife from that fine company. I'd recommend that you visit the Camillus forum here at BFC for more info, but the Camillus company has been doing a lousy job of moderating their forum over there and I doubt you would get an answer. It may be of interest mentioning that Camillus did have a booth at the last worlds fair in New York, in 2001.

Phil

ps... guys, if LT is stepping out of the room for a moment, let's try and fill his substantial shoes (or perhaps his socks). He's letting us play without a net!

Hey Phil,

Thanks for all your help. I happened to stubble across 4 more of those EH Best knives only with the Schrade Walden N.Y. U.S.A. named marked on the tang. Be happy to send you one, not sure of the value though.

Here's a picture.
