Penal Law, ya gotta wonder about something like that!

I had a request at work regarding blade length so I did some searching on the forums here but nothing that took me to the law itself for NY, so after some running around I found this site and thought I'd share it with you all.

http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/ny.txt

Read down through and it basically says that a knife with a blade of 4" or longer is intended to be only a stabbing instrument and is not legal.

A bunch of other legalize as well, age related type things.

I am amazed at modern day people or citizens that put up with these stupid knife and gun laws. The American people of the 2oth century (Americas century?) all over the country havent found a tax or law they didnt like. Tax and law them to death!

I know what you mean! As if there are better things to be doing or going after!
At work a fellow saw someone with a hunting knife on his hip, hunting season just opened in NY not too long ago, and I guess he wore it in, forgetting he had it on. This guy saw it and went to the safety fellow and said `Our company by-laws prohibit weapons!'
Since I'm the most visible person at work with knives I tend to worry when someone starts to ring the alarm bell, so I told our safety guy I'd locate the statue that stated 4" or longer knives are consider weapons, so at least they won't stop all knives from being at work!!! That would positively-absolutely kill me!

I guess that I am lucky in that no one in my line of work would be caught dead without a knife or at the least a multi-tool on them at all times. And we always have a good reason, as a professional Stagehand is on call twenty-four hours a day. If you don’t believe me, ask my wife, who has had more nights and weekends ruined by a last minute calls than any reasonable woman would tolerate.

James,
I believe you. I have always felt that you and Ed Fowler use a knife more than anyone else I know. I read your review regarding the Sniper and boy did you put that knife through the paces.

What confuses me is the part about 'not being displayed in public' (to summarize), Does that mean if it is <4" it should be concealed???!!!
Maybe one of the forums' Legal Eagles could translate...

As a resident of New York, I'm not surprised by this law--I AM disgusted by it. As far as the concealment issue goes, if what you quoted is true, you should be legally able to defend yourself based on the unclear wording of the statute. Perhaps the best way to deal with such an issue is to practice civil disobedience, and carry and purchase knives longer than 4". See what happens. Such laws are so old and obscure, however, I would doubt that its enforcement is high, if any. As soon as I can find the right fixed-blade to buy, I'll stick my neck out with the rest of you. As for those of you who carry fixed-blades for defnse, let's try not to stab anyone with them until we get the law changed. It might hurt our case.

Gator, I feel your pain! This is not an old arcane law. It was passed on Valentine's Day in the Early to mid eighties. The legislation was passed to outlaw the flood of cheap Paki "oo7's" that were being used and confiscated in crimes.
while it may be a stupid law, I think it is our best interest to know and obey it. I do belive ingnorance of the law is not a justifiable defence.
As far as changing things, write letters, vote and be careful who you vote for... I don't see anything changing soon...
