I've been looking for a fixed blade for a while now, I'm pretty much almost set on the CRK Nyala, seems to have gotten great reviews and looks like a great little fixed blade.

What's your opinion on the Nyala? I intend to use it for campcraft (nothing too heavy) and just day-to-day stuff. Anything I should know before I get one?

Also, anyone know where I can get custom scales for the Nyala? I want a pair of G-10 scales in safety orange.

Thanks!

P.S.: Does the Nyala still have the "Idaho Made" stamped into the blade or no?

I have had a Nyala Insingo, but solt it recently..It did have the Idaho Made engraving..Well made and looked good. It just lost it's place to another CRK (Umkhombe) that is similar.
Nyala is a fine knife and I suspect it will perform as you need it to.

Not sure on the custom scales..I thought about making some for my Umkhombe, but time is a factor and they definitely would not be G10- Hate machining that stuff!

I have the Nyala Insingo bought by my girlfriend for my birthday. I carried it hunting this past year and used it to field dress all 3 of my deer and was used the entire hunting season and it worked perfectly. For me, I would prefer the stonewash, but they all have the DLC coating on for some reason. My girlfriend bought the regular one for herself. I like them both, but each blade does serve better under different functions.

I own one and use it while hunting.
It did a great job on wild boar, it even impressed the sceptical hunting guide.
It's a sturdy knife I'm not afraid to lend to my buddies.
For EDC chores I prefer a Sebenza.
hope this helps.

I agree with the above comments.
I have 3 Nyala's and love the knife. It's a very capable hunting knife and I find it to be a really nice camping/hiking knife.

It's a lot more stout than most people realize. CRK starts with some pretty hefty stock but it's still a good slicer with the hollow grind they put on it.

You could be just as well served by an ESEE 3 or 4. The full flat grind makes them really efficient cutters but the handles are short and that's where the Nyala kills the competition !

The Nyala handle is long enough for multiple grips-comfortably. It's contoured and textured/grooved so it doesn't slip(for me) even when bloody, muddy, or wet.

If you're checking other less expensive options and have any reservations about spending extra on the Nyala I hope that the comments here and in the other Nyala threads have given you enough info to see that the Nyala is worth the extra to just about everybody who's posted an opinion about one.

I have both styles and recommend the standard drop point for field/hunting use.

Thanks for all the feedback.

People really seem to love this knife, I'm surprised it's not more popular.

When I first took a look at the Nyala I was afraid it looked better than it functioned, but now I can see it both looks good and functions fantastically.

I'll order one ASAP and get to using it quickly, hopefully I'll be able to get some custom scales.

Thanks!

I have a drop point Nyala and its a great knife; very comfortable and versatile for camping and backpacking which is what I've used it for primarily.

Something you should be aware of if you're going to go camping with it is that the loop on the sheath is relatively low and the butt of the handle is pointy resulting in potential for discomfort. On more than one occasion I got a good jab in my side while bending over to stoke a campfire or scrambling over a boulder. If I hadn't replaced it with a Mountaineer I (got from bhyde, thanks!) I would have gotten a dangler sheath for it before my next hike.

I forgot about that, I never used the gfeller sheath that comes with it.
I bought my first one second hand and it came with a Kydex sheath. When I received my Insingo version as a birthday present I promptly bought some Kydex for it.

If your interested I'll post up some pics.

I'd like to see some pics, and maybe the info for the kydex...I am planning to pick up a Nyala Insingo tomorrow :)

:D

Glad to hear it found a good home and is being used!

Here's a couple of pics.
Both sheaths have large Tek-Lok's on them.

I'll try to look up who made the Kydex for the Nyala Insingo. It was made by a fellow forum member and he did an outstanding job. If you search the Nyala and Nyala Insingo threads you'll find my posts complimenting his work.

Mmmmm, I never thought I'd like the looks of the Nyala in Kydex that much. This place is so bad for my bank account.

Hi,

I have just ordered the Nyala Insingo. Once it is here, it will get handgrooved CF scales, made by Cuscadi, which a friend of mine put on his Nyala. After that it will go to my favourite custom kydex sheet maker and receive a a kydex.

Mine is now on the way! I'm so excited for it to come, I'll check out the Cuscadi scales. Hopefully I can get a pair in safety orange.

Congrats, I'm sure that you'll like the Nyala.

Let us know which scales you end up getting for it.

Is the insingo blade longer than the drop point nyala? It looks like it in the picture above.

Woah I did not realize Cuscadi made nyala scales. I will definitely be ordering some tomorrow! I am not really a fan of the pattern in the original scales and this would fix it for me.

I plan on wearing mine around my ankle or on my thigh. Now all I have to do is find out how to get a sheath set-up that will achieve that...
