Nyala sheath question

I was just wondering if the leather sheaths that come with the Nyala feature the same urethane treatment as on the black one piece sheaths? Those were great sheaths, waterproof and stiff.

My sheath leather was raw on the inside, leading me to believe it was untreated. I could, however, be very wrong. I've also stated in another thread that I wished the sheath was made with a dangler loop for belt carry instead of the slits in the back for belt insertion. This situation is easily enough remedied so I will take care of it myself.

Mine was raw. If you can find my original post about my Nyala.... I ended up treating it with 4 applications of Obinauf's Oil and then 2 of the wax. It ate up like it was starving in the desert. But its awesome now. Water just does nothing to it. Hope that helps you.

Hey arijer, did you use obenhaufs boot oil? That is what I use on my Whites boots and all other leather boots. I hadnt even thought to put it on my leather sheaths. That stuff mixed with snoseal is fantastic.

I think I want to treat mine too. My wilderness belt won't fit through the belt slits. And I handled 5 of these, they all seemed really tight in the sheath which is good, but it also seems like they're really cutting into the leather.

They are, by design. There was a post, from Ann Reeve I think, about why Gefeller designed it that way (basically, retention).

Oiling the sheath will soften the leather to the point where it will loose knife retention qualities. The sheath will eventually gain a natural ,seasoned patina over time.

Hadn't thought of that. What about Obenauf heavy duty LP or Renaissance wax?? I'm just afraid of it getting wet and rotting over time.
