I bought a Nyala recently expecting it to be grey PVD coated. It arrived Stonewashed, with a recent birthdate. I was very pleasantly surprised. I called CRK and was told that they will be stonewashing the Nyalas going forward.

Just wanted to share, I figured someone might have skipped the Nyala because they didn't like the coating, might be time to give it a try :D

That's nice news. To be honest, the PVD coating really didn't do anything for me visually, and since you can't coat the edge, I just don't see the benefit. I have two of these (one from the first day's production and the other from the run of 25 that Orvis commissioned with Tamboti scales) and like the CRK stonewash a lot better than the coating.

Great- I just ordered one from KA this morning but I'm expecting to see the gray PVD when it arrives. Can you say where you purchased from? I'd very much prefer the stone wash.

I am just so happy with this medium sized knife, I've been looking for the "just right" EDC fixed blade for a while and I think that this will be it. The handle is just big enough to get a good grip on, it's comfortable to use (so far, based on my limited testing) thanks to the well designed handle (even the proud tang works well!). The blade shape seems perfect, the swedged spearpoint is strong to the tip but pierces very well and the hollow grind allows strength at the spine and little material behind the cutting edge.

I'm making kydex tonight, couldn't decide on olive or tan, so I think I'll use both :D

It's more or less a fixed blade Regular...'nuff said. ;)

Praise God, now I have an excuse to buy another Nyala! :p

Anyone know where to get a good Kydex sheath for my Nyala?

Does anybody have an idea of how long it'll take for the gray Nyala (Nyalas?) in stock with online retailers to be replaced with the stonewashed models?

It seems to me that CRK fixed blades sell out fast and are constantly being replaced.

Just call and ask before ordering, my experience has been that any vendor selling CRK knives is happy to check the knife over before shipping.

In the words of MatthewSB, I was pleasantly surprised to see my new Nyala in all it's stonewash glory. Birth date is May 20, 2015, fresh from the guys that see knives as art. A few pics

Wow, those pictures are really beautiful. I'm leaving the country soon so there's no point in getting one until I get back, but after I return I'll order one ASAP.

Micarta looks different then the first gen stonewahed nyalas. Is it blasted?

From my inspection I do not believe the micarta was blasted- just machined. It could be the variations in canvas materials that give it that rough surface look, but it has a finished yet grippy feel.

I have one that was from the first day and I would judge that the micarta scales had been lightly blasted, probably with glass beads. The scales in your picture look like they are straight from the machining. I'd be hard pressed to pick one over the other, but they do appear a little different.

I think they have wax, or something, on them from the factory. I scrubbed mine in soapy water with a toothbrush and it's duller in appearance and doesn't have the 'waxy' feel that they did out of the box.

Did you ask why the finish was changed?

They said it was a result of customer feedback, something about fingerprints but I don't recall exactly what was said. I'm sure that CRK customers, being more practical than tactical, would generally prefer a stonewashed stainless blade to a coated one.

I recall taking my Nyala out of the box and thinking immediately that the coating was a fingerprint magnet.

Good thing I cancelled my order for the PVD coated Nyala. I will wait for stone wash to show up in stock to order.
