I'm planning a trip to NYC and I was just wondering if my buck 110 in its belt sheath would be legal to carry in the city like it is in NJ. Well I'm pretty sure its legal in NJ but not absolutely sure of that either. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

No. I live outside of the city in Westchester and it is legal to carry, one time I was in the city and I had a folder clipped in my pocket and I was on the Subway. Two undercover cops came up to me and started questioning me and took the folder and they said all "weapons" were illegal in NYC. He said it is a misdemeanor to carry a knife. He have it back to me and told me to just keep it all the way down in my pocket since "I looked like a good kid".

Leave it at home. If you are young and plan on going out drinking and are out late, expect trouble if you are intoxicated and they find a knife on you. Anything you have on you will result in more charges, so leave it at home and use common sense. Clips are also a red flag to LEOs. The next cop may not be so forgiving.

In NYC, it is illegal to carry any knife with a blade over 4" (there is an exemption allowing transport to/from certain sporting purposes, but that doesn't apply to you), any knife visibly (pocket clip showing, in a belt sheath, if you can see any part of it, it violates the admin code). Also, it is illegal to carry any gravity knife- which in NYc means any knife that can be flicked open (by holding the handle or blade). Also , no daggers or autos.

Your Buck 110 is legal in NJ.

It is legal in NYC as well but knives in the city must be carried concealed. Belt carry is illegal. Put it into your pocket and you're OK.

On the other hand, knives are restricted from certain specific locations. This includes official areas like courthouses but also many tourist areas like the Statue of Liberty and I believe the Empire State Building. None of these places will have facilities for holding your knife till you leave.

Why, do you need a knife in NYC? especially a Buck 110.
That's really none of your business. The knife is legal in itself and a free citizen in this country is not obligated to explain why he is going about his ordinary, legal affairs.

Just trying to intimidate you. Congratulations to you and them for resolving it without putting you to more than momentary trouble.

The knife is legal as long as it's carried properly. When someone tells you "weapons" are illegal just remember not to call your knife a weapon. It's a convenient tool on too many ordinary occasions to leave home, but you have no interest or experience in hurting anyone with it.

New York City policy these days is to make carrying a knife more trouble than it's worth. At this point I don't know how many police even realize it's legal.

"Ps. I believe that a 'gravity knife' is held by the handle. there was a recent ruling and since pretty much any folder can be flicked open by the blade, any and all folders would be illeagal." Qouted By Mike above...

There have been many, many arrest for gravity knives where the blade is held and the handle of the knife is flicked open. This is one of the methods taught in the higher learning institue on 20 th street in NYC better known as the NYPD Academy. This all started with the Syderco blades with the large circle that could be easily held and the handle flicked open. I would LOVE to hear where you heard anything different. I think it is a BS way to call something a gravity knife, but the judges have upheld it often.....
