Im in the navy and living in near NYC on long island, I was reading up on some laws I tried to find but the provisions for military exceptions for knife possession didn't make too much sense to me. Would any one care to lay out some details?

edit* I have a spyderco centofante III and a myerchin rigging knife, looking to see what else Im allowed to have.

In my reading of NY laws military service is not an exemption. The lasws are written to protect only those who are actually on duty and carrying weapons, bladed or otherwise. Meaning that if you are not actually performing a military function you are not exempt. Furthermore, even when on dutu your CO had better signed off on a knife policy or you may in even bigger trouble than a civilian. There are literally hundreds of knife designs and styles that you can legally carry in NY. Why chance it?

P.S. As always, discretion and attitude will go a long way when you eventually have a run in with your friendly neighborhood LEO.

P.P.S Thank You for your service in the Navy.

thanks eyegore, that sounds about right. Ordered a nice BM 530, nice and legal. I can't believe I'm hearing that you cant carry folders on their clips in NYC though, thats insane.

Be careful with that 530. A NYC cop could see it as a gravity knife because of the axis lock. Keep the pivot tight and hopefully it wont be to much of a problem.
