NYC pizza

It's been mentioned a couple of times now that the pizza in NYC is some of the best if not the best. Of course taste is always up to the individual. I just have to say that years ago my ship pulled up to Earle, NJ and we took a train to NYC. We stopped at a roadside stand selling pizza by the slice and it was darn good. Did the usual tourist stroll and kept stopping here and there eating. This was in my early twenties when you're still in that bottomless stomach phase of life so many a sandwich and slice met their demise that day. We left and I was not the only one questioning why all the food was so good. Just curious if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I was in the US Navy from 1983-1987. My ship went to Portland Maine twice for a port visit. I went to Freeport to visit LL Bean and stopped at a lobster shack. The lobster dinner was less expensive than a Big Mac and way better. I have other experiences similar to yours.

Or Ricobene's breaded steak pizza .

I lived in NJ for 60 years and the pizza was terrific, mostly NY style. We moved to Utah and in 20 years have only found two places that could compete, both are out of business!

The thing about NY pizza is it's not "NY style."

First of all, it should never be greasy (the biggest complaint about "NY style pizza").

Second, the dough needs to be freshly handmade.

Third, the sauce needs to be made from scratch.

Finally, never skimp on the quality or quantity of the cheese and toppings.

"NY style" tends to disregard all these things.

Cant eat it with your hands unless its been in the fridge all night but 2 slices is a meal.
Which begs the question: why not skip the trouble and just make a lasagna?

Truth be told, I've never eaten a true Chicago deep dish pizza. My brother in law grew up in Chicago and swears it's delicious when done properly and listed about a dozen places he'd recommend. Otherwise he said not to bother. He's a great cook and his sense of what is good vs bad is generally accurate, so I've no reason to doubt him.

But, man alive, a thin crust that is both crispy and chewy with sauce, cheese, and some form of sausage is a miracle and I can't fathom anyone improving upon it. I would be glad to be proven wrong.

Guess what I'm ordering tomorrow? Another inch on my waistline. 🤣 👍😭😭😖

No. It's been a month to the day since I last ordered pizza. Maybe I can be strong and wait a little longer.
