I am needing advice for a NYC vacation for a week.

Can anyone give me advice, do's and don't's while there ?

Also, any sites, eating places that are not usually seen by most that would be good ?

Thanks for any advice.

Andrew, great link.

I'm a native New Yorker and Robbie the only thing I can suggest to you is, don't try to see it all in a week. NYC will constantly amaze you and it changes block to block. The best way to get around is to walk, second best is the subway. Try not to look like a tourist, by that I mean try to know where you're going before you start and stay alert.

NYC has a bad rep for being dirty, mean and dangerous, it isn't. We get millions of tourists every week and over half make it out alive. :D

Make sure you eat some real pizza - you'll know it's the real deal when it is spelled apizza and is pronounced ah-BEETS. There are thousands of great restaurants, but make sure you try a corned beef on rye for lunch one day just in some pub.

Don't bother visiting the Intrepid (the aircraft carrier). They're pulling it out to drydock for refurbishing and it's stuck in the mud right now.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (upper East Side) has an amazing collection of Arms and Armor.

They also have some nice pictures.:D

The Museum of Natural History is fun--lots of "stuffed animals", including the Kodiak Brown Bear shot by Teddy Roosevelt. The size of that critter will remind you to "bring enough gun", which, unfortunately, you can't do in New York.

There are at least 100 museums in NYC !! Some are definitely world class like the Metropolitan museum of Art. You might give us an idea of your interests so we can be more specific. Are you going alone or with wife or friends ? There are also many theaters Broadway and off broadway , stores etc.

Very simple advice: Don't. :)

If I absolutely had to go to Gotham I would try to hit The Met for some study time.

Oh and it's not a bad idea to go armed like whats his name in that movie Escape from New York. They eyepatch will probably help you avoid suspicion too...

If you see a Broadway show, I would recommend Wicked or Mamma Mia (especially if you are escorting a lady). If you are seeing any show go to the TKTS stand in Times Square for good deals.

If you like Italian food - go to little Italy for lunch. It's cheaper and less crowded.

Don't make eye contact with the dudes handing out fliers or the ones asking for "donations" - it isn't worth it.

Spend at least some time seeing Central Park if you can.

If you want to go up into the Statue of Liberty buy a special pass early - otherwise just the trip over and through Ellis is totally worth it.

Oh, and bring everyone home an I heart NY t-shirt and they'll think you went all out (usually $2-$5 each, less if you buy lots or can haggle).

Oh - and don't stay at the Hotel Pennsylvania unless you have had your shots and aren't afraid to share your room with critters only seen in horror movies.....

If you, like many knife people, like loud "Hawaiian" shirts, there are a number of stores that sell every cheap ones on Broadway in the 40s. the people in the shops usally don't speak English, but that doesn't matter.

If those guys would also sell cowboy hats, they could be the offical haberdashers to the Blade Show.........:D

If you are in after Thanksgiving try and catch the window displays. You might also want to visit ground zero while you are here. Oh and you need to take at least 1 subway ride, maby in the afternoon they arent crowded then. You can stop at grand central station and see some great archetecture and go to Juniors for lunch. Save room for desert their cheesecake is great.
