Just got back from the New York custom knife show in Jersey City and I have to say, it's an incredible show! If you are in the area, it's still going on tomorrow and I would really suggest paying a visit. Even if you don't buy anything, it's nice to meet and talk to a lot of major makers/distributors in the industry. If you DO want to buy something though, there is an unbelievable selection of knives to choose from. Everything from Striders to multi-thousand dollar one of a kind custom pieces. I got a chance to talk to Brady Miller of Monkey Edge Knives and he's a really nice guy. Picked up a Starlingear bead and M.E. Patch and he even threw in a PSD Strider spanner bit (bought my SnG from them last week). Also, talked with Pat Crawford for quite a bit and he's also a very nice guy in general...with some incredible knives too! Wound up walking away with one of Pat's CCK's (Credit Card Karambit) in blue anodized titanium. Really neat deployment method that Pat demonstrated. Basically deploys from the sheath using a static cord attached to your belt loop as you draw from the pocket. All in all, just a really nice day. Highly recommend checking it out next year if you can't make it tomorrow.
Here's a pic of everything I brought back:

Went today as well! Had a good time.

I was SO close to getting one of those Strider PT's with flamed backside and tan scales. (still want to get one)

Walked out with a Hinderer Pen and Pat Crawford mini folder.

Yeah, those PT's were tempting. But in talking to Brady he said the next run of them were supposed to be Striped so I think i'll wait out for one that matches my SnG. Which Crawford did you get? Is it called the mini folder?

Personally I thought the show sucked. Cost me $80 and 4 hours of driving time. I purchased the VIP ticket for $10 extra to get in a hour early (technically before it was open to the public) on Friday the day the show opened, and when I got in just about every custom knife had already been sold. Dealers had snatched the entire inventory the night before. I had about 5 makers who's offerings I was interested in (Jeremy Horton, RJ Martin, Allen Elishewitz, Kirby Lambert, Bob Terzuola etc etc) and all of them were basically sold out when the show started. The only people who had inventory where resellers. Complete waste of time. I'll never go back. Better deals and better variety online. Sad, because I purchased my first knife from Walter Brend, back at the NY Knife show 20 years ago (when it was still in NY), and had not been back since.

If the scenario you explained is accurate
; good to know that that is how they work it, which does suck because as an end user, you do want to have the opportunity to pick up a custom before the dealers do or at least have a fighting chance. So, I'm glad that I didn't make it out there- I would have been irritated to say the least.

These type of shows allow one to appreciate the other shows that do give an equal opportunity of purchase, like the CA Custom Knife Show.

Didn't buy a thing, but the company was good and the conversation at dinner was lively.

I do have to admit that I was pretty pissed that the only Hinderers available were going for sky high prices after dealers won them from the drawing they did. However, since i'm pretty local (less than an hour drive) I think it was worth it. If you're after really popular stuff and have to drive a few hours, i'd agree that it's not worth it. Allen Elishewitz supposedly sold out within the first 10 minutes of the show. I wasn't going with hopes of getting anything in particular but would've liked to nab an XM-18 at a NORMAL price. I'm in no rush though, maybe i'll get lucky in the drawing next time.

I have no problem with the Hinderer lotto. I had to leave early, but at least the Hinderers weren't all sold to dealers ahead of time.

I have no problem with the drawing either. I just hate it when dealers get them and inflate the prices double or triple what they paid. I know that's just how it is and it is business but it sucks.

Yeah, Jeremy Horton's selection was practically sold out the night before (he only had 4 left when I got there at 1PM), Allen Elishewitz only had 2 knives left on his table, RJ Martin had about 4, and the drawings took care of those. It took me about 4 hours of total driving, some tolls & parking, but I made out ok and got what I wanted :) I also got to talk to RJ Martin, Darrel Ralph, Jeremy Horton, and Pohan Leu.

For me it was only about a 45 minute drive.

While I do agree with some of the above comments I still liked the show very much.

To be able to see(and handle) some unbelievable knives that I usually only see on a screen was much worth it. Also, being able to put a few faces to a few names was quite enjoyable too!

I purposely brought some extra cash and while I was very tempted to spend it I did I still made out good with my two "scores".

I hope to attend the ECCKS in March for the same reasons above.

Sorry to hear that. I've only been to one knife show -- the CA Custom Knife Show last month -- and like dark impaler said, experiences like yours definitely make me even more appreciative of the policies Dan Delavan of Plaza Cutlery has put in place for the CA CKS.

Did anyone get a chance to check out "Michael Raymond's Estrella"? It's a Ti integral folder based off of Scott Cook's Lochsa?

yeah, the two he had on the table were excellent.

Awesome!

I got on his list to get one when it becomes available...

I have a feeling that it's going to be just like when scott cook opened up shop, after a fewyears you won't be able to find one and the aftermarket price will triple!

Did anyone score some in-hand pics of the estrella??

I should have taken some pics but all i had was my cell phone and it certainly wouldn't have don e them much justice. You won't be disappointed with yours!

I had a great time at NYCKS as well. I plan on starting a thread on it later on (when I have a chance to upload pics.)

I finally became a knife rights member. Meeting Doug Ritter was cool. Almost pulled the trigger on a wicked edge (and have a feeling that I will sometime very soon). Overall a cool experience. I think that the Hinderer raffle was a good way to do it except I felt that too many dealers entered their entire staff (giving themselves a better chance at winning) but whatever.

It was pretty cool, and I'm looking forward to the ECCKS in a few months too. I just have to ask, did they do the drawings for the door prizes or when does that happen or did I miss it?
