Just got back from the first day of this year's New York Custom Knife Show. Boy! I thought I would be first in line if I got there two hours early. I ended up third in line.

. I headed for the Busse Combat Knives table first. Hoooweeee! There were a few prototypes and customs there, as well as the Basic line. The INFI Combat Hatchet is very nice (got pictures to post hopefully by Monday). I ended up with a 9" INFI bowie type with a blade catcher notch, bead-blasted blade, less pronounced "parrot's beak" at the butt end (more pictures to post). I then went over to Darrel Ralph's table. The Apogee is a very nice knife indeed. I'm glad I put in an order for a lefty model. I then went over to Chris Reeve's table. The Sebenzas with stabilized wood inserts are works of art unto themselves. Met three forum members. Where were you all? I cheated and printed out my own Bladeforums.com label and stuck it on my shirt before I entered the show. I'll be there again tomorrow. For those who posted asking about Farid's knives, I went over to his table. His folders didn't look like Sebenzas turned inside out anymore, but still very, very beefy--->handles almost as thick as a Battle Mistress--->on a folder, no less. More later.

i'm going Sat. have to take family to Empire State bldg. first and don't want to have any problems with the metal detectors if i buy anything at the show first. anybody think i'll be okay at the Empire State bldg wearing a Leatherman Wave or maybe just a Benchmade 705 (the smaller one)?. maybe they'll just hold it for me while we go up the Empire State Bldg...

I was there friday night. Many makers were sold out, Mel Pardue among them.

For best of what was left I'd go with the following:

Stick Handle Bowie style:

Roland Riddle had 2 I liked
One was 440V, SS guard and butt cap.
The other was ATS I think, Both had Beefy Beautiful Stag handles.

For Folders I liked the Viele style knives Made by ??? I can't remember his name. Anyway he had 3 Liner locks with Ivory handles 2 with dark Damascus 1 with SS Damascus. Boy these knife walked and talked. They actually snaped closed like no other liner line I ever touched.

Rich

I may go back Saturday.

Where were the BF stickers? Was it me? I did 18 hours @ work slept 2 and went to the show. Maybe I missed them? See ya all tomorrow! I gotta say Newt is a pisser. That man has a sense of humor....RTAK or 101st???? Or carnivor or pioneer? I'm sooooooooo confused!!

I'm sorry I missed you folks today. I did run into quite a few other forumites, but not as many as I thought I would see.

I was there when the doors opened & just got home now so my show report will have to wait 'til tomorrow. In the meantime, I do have a heads-up for anyone who will be there tomorrow or Sunday -- some of the best bargains that I have found in a long time are being offered by some South African Custom makers. Do yourselves a favor and visit tables 28-30 in the "A" section ( all the way down on the left as you enter. I picked up a little Anro Bernard beauty -- 3" razor sharp 440C clip point with a giraffe bone handle & water buffalo sheath -- for an outrageous price. Very beautiful stuff, particularly if you like natural handle material.

BTW, RJ Martin, table A-18, has the labels. More to come tomorrow

I may be goin' to hell in a bucket, Babe, but at least I'm enjoyin' the ride.

I got there at 12:05 on friday and it was packed. Unfortunately I'm a little strapped for cash right now and it really sucks going to a knife show without any money. However I did order a nifty little fixed utility blade made by Geno Denning from Les. Excellent fit and finish for the price. There where many knife makers who caught my eye that don't have the name recognition as some of the others. Some of these are E.V. Chavar who some nice concealment knives, Lourens Prinsloo who had some real nice folders one of which had a hipo ivory handle,
and Daniel L. Cannady who had very nice hunters with natural handles at reasonable prices. The Busse table was great it was the highlight of the show for me. Too bad that by the time that I got there all the best stuff was snatched up by Greg

. By the way thats one awesome piece of INFI that you got there.

I'm in the same boat, I'm not poor but I am broke. It's hard going to a show without cash.
I had a great time just chatting around. Knife people are the best! I was there for about 3 hours,(4-7PM) I didn't see that many BladeForum name tags either, maybe 3-4.
I was dissapointed Ed Fowler didn't make it, had a good time talking to Al Pendray, Tommy Lee, Chris Reeve, Pat Crawford, Mike Erie, Ricky Fowler and a whole bunch of others. The maker whose work impressed me the most, was someone I was unfamiliar with, Herb Derr. I was wondering; did anyone else check him out, or know his work? I went back to his table about 4 times trying to see if I was missing something, but everytime I was just more and more impressed with his work, and amazed by his prices. he was the guy that almost made me go to the ATM, something I promised I wouldn't do.
I started a new Post asking about him, so far no nibbles. Maybe the folks going back today can give me some feedback, tell me what you think. I personaly didn't see anything I liked better in the $300 range.
For everyone going back today, have a wonderful time.
