Nylon Sheaths, not???

So it is all about leather and kydex these days?

I recall that when my battle rat was delivered in 2005 it came with a complimentary black nylon sheath with a Kydex liner. Not the fanciest thing, but functional. I have no idea where the sheath came from, Eric probably knows.

In any case, I am just wondering why not more nylon sheaths out there? I've got nothing against leather and kydex. In fact, I love both materials and think they make truly collectible and functional sheaths. I just wonder why ballistic nylon (BN) isn't more prevalent.

It seems like an easy and inexpensive enough material to work with. It is surely durable enough, and the material is quite available. I would imagine that BN sheaths could probably be cranked out en masse faster than even Kydex can be.

I see that one of the designated sheath makers (Semper Paratus) does in fact do BN sheaths, but I never hear anything about their work.

So I guess the question is, if someone were to put out a basic BN sheath for say $20 a throw(including shipping) for these fine Busse knives, would people give them any business?

I been thinking real hard about foregoing the leather and making a BN sheath for my AK. If only I could find a heavy BN in a nice tan...

I like nylon. Dan at Semper Paratus Tactical does amazing work and I go to him for those sheaths. I suppose I am a sheath snob in a way. I wouldn't bother with a low end sheath for my knives. I would rather keep a blade on the shelf or in the hands of a sheath maker before I would take it into the field in a sheath I wasn't happy with. I do like it when a knife will fit into a Spec-Ops though. I consider that to be a great off the shelf sheath but only tend to go with those when Dan is back logged. His sheaths are custom, adjustable ride height, leg drops and worth the extra $10 to $20 every time.

Here is a sheath I had made by Semper Paratus. I highly recommend Dan!

Here's a pic of a Semper Paratus sheath for a SAR Rat. It is amazing. Comfortable, secure carrry and bombproof.

I just got a Spec Ops small Survival Sheath. I like it very much, definitely better than the Ontario RTAK sheaths. I am hoping the BATACs will fit the Spec Ops!!

Dan is my go to guy when it comes to nylon, except for the occassional SpecOps picked up at shows just to cloth a sharp blade for transit.

Spec Ops should fit the Badger perfectly. It fits my SJTACLE real well although I had to take the retention screw out so the edge wasn't hitting on a blade of that length.

What kind of insert does Semper Paratus use? Is it removable? What does one for a BATAC size knife gonna run me, approximately? Thanks.

It's a custom fit kydex liner Dan makes. Briann at Okuden used to make the liners but he is too busy these days so helped Dan get going on creating his own. My SAR Rat sheath pictured has a liner Dan made and it's a great fit. No slop at all in there. It is removable by removing the two screws at the bottom.

Anybody get a FBM sheath from Dan? I'm wondering how big the pocket would be on a sheath for a big chopper...

The pouch would be pretty huge. The pouch on the sheath he made for my HOGFSH expands so much I can almost make a fist in it LOL. You would definitely want to have a small box/kit for anything small you might want to put in there. Cool thing is it isn't obtrusive when you don't have it max'd out

I have a few Busse sheaths and a Spec-Ops or two.

For anything smaller than a SH, I really like leather. Kydex with tec-loc winds up too far from my waist and the "clunk" when it bangs into things is annoying.

I won't STORE anything in leather, but prefer to carry it that way.

Funny is I like plastic for my holsters. ??? I think it's that tec-loc. I really really hate them things.

Agreed Dennis... HATE techlocks pretty much. The main kydex I have owned has been from Okuden and it's always been a leg drop so they carry VERY well and no dealing with the techlocks.

...and I do like leather a LOT. It's rainy enough here that I reserve leather for certain blades/conditions.

Dan Rocks!!!

His sheaths are rock solid, and the front pouchs on them are huge, I'm still amazed at how much I can fit in mine. I've owned two from Dan and both were great work. He's a real good guy to deal with also. If you go nylon, go with Semper Paratus, you won't be disappointed.
