Nylon Sheaths?

I had a general question for all forumites. I have had a couple of requests to offer what I'll call "utility" sheaths made out of that black nylon material (don't know what the technical name is) that is seen on most high-end sheaths for my Gurkha House Khukuris. The customers are usually Marines or Army personnel who want to jump with their khukuri, but can't because the sheath is frowned upon by aircrew.

Would there be any interest here for such a product? They would cost about $30.00, and would not be custom made for each knife, but, rather, would be manufactured to allow for the slight differences one find's in khukuris. I'm thinking of starting with a 15 incher to fit the Ang Khola, Service Number One, or Bhojpure. I know it would be tough to get one sheath that fits all of those knives, but I think that with a well-made sheath and a retaining strap, it could be done quite nicely at a good price.

Thoughts?

Kydex is a good material as it is very durable. It is both highly cut and impact resistant. I have little use for jumping out of airplanes but tougher sheaths are always nice. Jim March posted some very nice ideas for Kydex sheaths for large khukuri-style knives awhile back.

Craig,
Brigade Quartermasters www.brigade.com used to offer a jump sheath that might give you some design ideas. I have one that's held up for several years of use with a short machete. (I tried, but the opening is not wide enough for my khukuri.)

It's nylon fabric with a plastic liner, eyelet riveted all around the blade area. There are two sets of belt loops on the back -- one at handle height and one a few inches above the bottom -- that will accept either a web belt or Alice clips. The knife is held in place by both a strap across the handle & a flap over it. The flap can be tucked behind the sheath when more ready access is desired. The main improvement I would like is a sturdier plastic liner.

Good luck with the project.

Kydex. Thanks, Cliff. Brian: I'm thinking of a kydex sheath that has all the features you mention. I also want a sturdy plastic liner, although I'm not sure what sacrifices will have to be made to bring a "one size fits all" sheath to market.

Kydex or Nylon? I think that options for both would be good. The advantage the nylon has is it's silent, which will appeal to the Marine types. Different carry position loops may not be a bad Idea.

We need to get Jim March in here. He's got a pal that makes sheaths out of almost anything you might want. From the pix they appear to be top quality and the price is reasonable.

The fella that made Jim's sheaths for his monsterous Outsider custom knife was Scott Evans of Edge-Works. The design is one that could easily handle a HI khukri. Their web site is www.tacticalholsters.com The father and son Spydie Moran sheaths were for my oldest boy and me.

I did NOT escape from the institution! They gave me a day pass!

Maybe if you could figure out some way for us to attach a second knife to the sheath. I have a Spyderco Moran that I'd love to pair with my khukuri.

The Spyderco Moran is a great little knife. That and a ceramic rod would make quite a modern day karda and chakma.

Craig,

Maybe you could become a dealer for Spyderco and fit a Moran + ceramic rod in Nylon sheaths. You can forget the traditional sheaths and side pieces.

I've sent a Service Number One out so they can look at a few design options. I told them that I wanted it to be flexible (so it could accomodate the slight variations in blade size and thickness. I'd like to get just one sheath that would handle the thicker Bhojpure also, but I may have to bite the bullet and go for two options.

Craig,

If you get some kydex offerings up and running let us know. I'll take one for my 15" AK.

Will do. When and if I get the project up and running, I'll do a posting here (with Bill's permission). I'm going to try to design them to work on both HI and GH khukuris of the 15" variety.

I'll be interested in such a sheath if you could get a "Crocodile Dundee" rig for it. You know, the khukuri hanging diagnally across the back. handle pointing down and point pointing toward the left shoulder.

As it is, if I wear my khukuri on the side, it gets in the way of my hand. If I wear it on my behind, it'll flap around all day. With a shoulder rig, not only would it be more comfortable, it would be quicker to get at. Plus it almost disapears under a jacket.
