One of my old rigs I used to fish for big bluegill was a slip float and nymph pattern on a light spinning rod. Worked well for those places too over grown for fly fishing.

So, what are your favorite nymph patterns for producing bluegill? Bead head or not? I'm looking for some new or different patterns to try. I usually stick to prince nymph or just a brown with green head and no tail. Usually in a #12 or #14 but sometimes a #10.

My boy knocked'em stiff last weekend on a black Pink Squirrel. I like a gold bead, dubbed with Gray squirrel body hair. Looks like a Caddis case. The bead helps get past the littler fish and down to the larger ones; at least I like to think so.:)

Poppers are a hoot too.
My son's girl fished Poppers on a spin rod.

I need to stick to underwater baits that can be fished from a float for now, it's mostly because I have to fish the same as my 5 year old boy does, he hasn't gotten the casting thing down well enough to do it under trees on the bank yet. But I do like some top water action!

I have good luck using a black wooly bugger pattern. I have experimented with other colors that work but the plain black seems to be most consistent with just a few strands of flash in the tail.

Tough to beat a Green Weenie for sub-surface panfish - it's cheap, quick to tie and very effective. May work even better in red (Red Weenie? That just sounds wrong.).
