Here is the latest off of my bench. It is a all purpose outdoors knife I made for a member here on B.F. I hope he likes it as much as I do. I pretty much just up scaled my O-1 Hunter/Skinner.

It is made from 3/16" O-1 and the length is eaisily seen with the scale next to it. The handle material is black linnen micarta, with stainless hardware. Heat treated to 58-60 HRC.Also etched in Ferric Chloride to show a hamon. I am just about complete with the sheath, it will be a pouch sheath treated in bees wax.

Comments please

My other pic did not come out the first time so I'll try again.

Thanks Nick, sold

That's a great all purpose do anything knife and like the size!

I'm Glad you like it Martin , I am away from work so I can not read any e-mails until Monday. I will talk with you then.

Thanks Waredbear, I'm planning on making 8 of these if you are interested.

Thanks again
Nick:)

I know you etched it in ferric chloride, but did you leave it at that or did you do anything else to the finish?

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. I'm back from my weekend hunting trip and was succesfull, I shot a nice little 6 point whitetail. Now the work begins....butchering. It's got a smallish inside spread, of 13 1/2 inches. But the pressure is off and I can wait for a larger one now.

Tom, I hand sand the knife to 280 grit then etch the blade and buff it out with 00 steel wool. I hope that was the answer you were looking for.

Thanks
Nick Allen:)

Thanks again guys, I hope to make myself one of these in the near future. I really like the way it feels, I really wanted to take it hunting with me this passing weekend, but I can not sell a used knife:D

Nick:)

Nick if you told me that I would have let you take it and make me another one, damn.

Cheers and thanks,

SpearZ

That's my kind of knife.

Is 01 hard to take care of? I've never owned an 01 blade. I have some "raw" 1095 knives and I have to keep them well oiled. I've had a few of the 1095 neck knive with parkarized coatings and cord wrapped handles rust terribly under the cord wrap.

Thanks 4th, O-1 will rust like any high carbon steel blade. I use a lanolin based spray on my knives that will keep them from rusting. The blade will patina to a nice finish over time.

After nearly getting lost by the Postal Service, it arrived today.

I nickname the Sportsman the "Little big Knife" it is a small overall package with a nice good sized blade on it. Great handle area because it locks your hand in front and back, easy to get several different grip positions and very comfortable. Workmanship, design, fit and finish is very nice, the shaping of the micarta is excellent, nice contouring of the handle has a great feel to the hand. There is lots of sturdness to the knife, it's very solid.:) Could be used for Camp, hunt or fishing knife or EDC.

Blade cutting area is 4 1/2" overall 9 1/2"

Also, could be used be any military personnel, if you had to go out for miles it wouldn't way you down or be cumbersome, but would be very useable knife when needed and razor sharp out of the box by Nick. My first knife from Nick, meeting him on BF, congrats.

Wow! that did take a long time to make it up there.Thank you for your positive response. Martin and I figured this knife just got stolen, so I was working on a replacement knife for him. Sort of wierd it shows up right about the time the replacement is finished. I am so happy that you feel the knife would be able to handle many tasks. This is why I named it the sportsman, because I felt it could handle a multitude of tasks.

Thanks again, and keep in touch.

Nick Allen:)
