I recently got bit with the Damascus Buck 110 bug. I don't know why it didn't happen sooner, But it finally got me! I have a nice one on the way that you all probably saw in Ark's post. The fire oak red bone! Can't wait to see it and use it.
It started a month or so back when I traded for a brown jigged bone factory damascus 110 and it turned out to be a 1990 model. I carried it for a couple of days and cleaned it up and stropped it to one of the sharpest edges I have ever been able to obtain on a knife. It would shave hair off my arm from 3 inches away! :) No, Really! Anyhow, I gave it to my brother for his birthday. My Twin brother and his 50th birthday, so it had to be special!
Now I want to know more about the Damascus Buck used back then and also any info on the Thomas Damascus that can be shared would also be appreciated. If you have some pics to tide me over for a couple of days, It would also be nice if it's not too much trouble! What pattern names of damascus was it? What steel? Thanks so much!

well ...
{{and i am likely sticking my foot in my mouth again}}

somehow i feel like that a 110 frame with a
after market blade is not a 110... more like a clone ?
[[there are real bucks with out the tang stamp
but that is not the same]]

nor is it still a buck knife or is it ..?
this is open to each persons feelings and i dont mean to belittle any ones feelings
these are jest my own feelings ... i do wander what others think though..
the old damascus steel buck used was from several sourced
one source had a few de-lamination issues
Thomas damascus is great steel and
it would behoove buck to get some and use it !

yes damascus is extremely toothy and i love it also
it has to be cleaned and dried as it will rust

Yeah, I feel the same way about aftermarket no tang stamp blades, But the one I have coming is a Buck stamped blade from the 90's. I was posting a few days back about those aftermarket blades, and got some decent feedback on them. I may try to restore one of my old worn out 110's at some point in the future, But for now, I was curious about who made Buck's Damascus back before Thomas and what pattern of damascus it was called.I'm O.K. with a Pimped Clone if it speaks to me! I tried to pick up a custom shop damascus last week, But was told that it was out of the question for now. I know the one I have coming won't have a Buck warranty, But I think the seller will stand behind it if there is a problem relating to workmanship, And it is a Buck stamped blade.I'm going to keep my eyes open for factory stock damascus 110's . Maybe I'll get lucky!

ark does dayum good work and i did not know this was a buck blade
parker frost i think made soem buck stock

Parker Frost? I seem to remember they had a place in alabama making damascus back in the 80's? Maybe it was later bought by Bear and Son? My Remembery isn't always spot on, But I'm thinking it was something along those lines. I sure didn't know Buck used any of their stuff. Thanks for the info 110!

Seaplane,

I seem to remember the carbon steel and nickel damascus used 20 years ago was from Bear and Son out of Alabama. The current Thomas damascus is stainless steel. Its a very good blade and you should try your best to get a 110 with it. You will like it too.

Here is a link to a retailer who sells it (shows why D.Thomas 110 blades are expensive options).

I get the impression that Buck got thier damascus blades shaped and ready to install in a knife, is that correct or do the stamp or lazer cut them out like other blades?

no they stamped them out with the press
they had to have the damascus in large sheats
seems i counted a puched out sheet and
it had like 16 to 20 blade holes
looked like a ladder
now i think they lazer them out ..
Joe?

Ok so Buck stamp would make them more authentic OEM knives. I dont know if clone is the right word but modified I guess would certainly fit. Still a Buck knife. We still call WBC or Yellowhorse or Leroy mods Buck dont we? All IMHO
of course.

From what I saw on the Buck dvd, lazer is for harder steels(ie s30v or ats34?-my guess not referenced in dvd) and more intricate paterns.

Then there is the newer water jet cutting that some factories do . I just got my Ark's 110. I wish I could post a oic, But it's allready posted in another thread. Thanks out to Buck110 for sending me quite a bit of history on the Buck Damascus . I am looking forward to seeing Buck's future factory offerings in Damascus for the 110. I hope I don't have too long of a wait! :)
