Has anyone ever tried making handles out of o.s.b.?(oriented strand board) I would think 1/4" sanded down and sealed would look interesting. Maybe even plywood? I've seen bowls, vases turned out of both..just an idea?

sorry, i don't know anyone who would put plywood on a knife. it's made of soft wood, i use only the hardest of woods, exotics. they're natuarly sealed and look magnificant.

There is nothing manmade that can compare to the beauty of a natural wood made by the Big Man upstairs.

Just my 2 cents

If a man can keep alert and imaginative, an error is a possibility, a chance at something new; to him, wandering and wondering are a part of the same process. He is most mistaken, most in error, whenever he quits exploring.

It might work if you get some hardwood plywood. You should be able to find some with birch veneers and a white oak face or something like that at woodworking stores.I agree with the other guys on plain plywood. Its normally made out of Pine Spruce and Fir that lumber companys buy in bulk. There isn't any real consistency to it it would be soft enough that the handle wouldn't wear well. The consistency problem would make it hard to finish because the different species of wood will take the finish differently.Thats just my opinion. Good luck with whatever you decide on.

I think you may have an idea there. If you stained it a bright colour with the water based analine dye each flake would take the colour differently. You would have to seal it with a hard sealer like polyester casting resin or a lot of crazy glue to give it a glass like surface but it might be worth the effort. OSB unlike plywood is random enough to be interesting.

if you want different colors, try dymondwood (pakkawood) that looks neat, ands it's water proof, so you only need to buff as a sealer.

Thanks for agreeing George, (must be a Canadian thing). I work at a OSB mill, when you really sand it down different layers of strands show up, looks cool. Actuall the plywood I was talking about is "Finnboard", I think there are 24 layers in it, very hard, almost like a wooden wear plate.

I've never used Finnboard before, but it sounds like it could work. When I said I didn't think plywood would work I was talking about the regular pine sheeting thats used for a million different things. The Finnboard you mentioned sounds like raw dymondwood.Really, Dymondwood is just birch plywood thats had each veneer stained a different color then glued together and stabilized. So the Finnboard just lets you pick your own colors.Good luck.
