First weekend of each October, begins the International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque. Runs for 9 days.
Balloons from all over the world. Special Shapes are really something to see. Last year, just under a 1,000 showed up, this year only about 750.

Moon glows at night are really something. When they light up the balloons , tethered to the ground all at once.

Kodak sponsored it for years, but dropped out last year , saying they had to cut back on their expenses. No new major sponsors to date, but the Fiesta still continues.

Anyone interested in seeing some of the balloons, run a search for International Balloon Fiesta, should come up with good info, if not I'll try to post a URL here.

NO KUKURIS ALLOWED, FOR OBVIOUS REASONS:D

And now we'll wait and see how many smash their balloons into the mountains to the east or get tangled up in the electric lines.

Every year one or the other. Big story today that is was getting more difficult to land, as Albuquerque has developed so much, that not too many open spaces anymore.
Wonder how many will drift into the restricted areas of Kirtland AFB, having fun with the increased security.

Been there for a few of the balloon "races." Used to live up in the Taos area, northern Sangre de Cristos.

Ever climb Wheelers Peak?

I did a couple of years ago with my son. Well, I made the first 3 miles, anyway. God, forgot to put air up there, of course my smoking didn't help.

When I stopped at Moose Meadow? Mountain Blue birds would sit on your hand, take food from you and if you weren't careful steal it on the wing before you get snacks from your hand to your mouth. I could have sat there for hours with the birds on my shoulders , hands. No fear from them, at all.

My son made it the full 7 miles up and back.

Wheeler's Peak was and is too much for me. I'd get up as high as a trail bike would take me or an old CJ Jeep.

heeeh! yEP, I see lotas balloon driftings in Indiana. flat land is easy to land on, I guess.

Sounds like Uncle has not completely recovered from the "Street Vibrations" and 40,000 bikers last weekend. Hot August nights, Balloon Races, Street Vibrations, Air Races, all for the purpose of filling motel and hotel rooms at the cost of quality of living for the locals. Cost of law enforcement during these times goes sky high, and gets passed on to the taxpayers. :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf:

We should sponsor a Bladeforums.com baloon shaped like a giant knife.

The HI Khukuri Baloon....
Now that sounds like a great idea. I can almost see it :) ... then again, crosswinds would be pretty hard on it :grumpy:

This last 3 day weekend fiasco was the chili cookoff. Downtown streets blocked, of course. Next weekend is the Italian festival -- downtown streets blocked, of course. As Rusty pointed out, this is all fine and good IF you're a motel, restaurant or casino owner but if you're run of the mill Renoite trying to conduct business it's hell and YOU end up paying the bill for extra services required for these rotten functions.
