I managed to obtain a source for a stump for dishing a shield boss.

How deep and what diameter should the dish be?

Mine is 5" diameter, 2.5" deep with a 1" rim outside this, drilled for the 4 mounting rivets at 90 degree intervals: Here's my shield: (36" dia., 1/2" plywood, steel strap handle, with 1/2 round hardwood molding epoxied to it for ease in handling (also wrapped & varnished) & rawhide edging.

Shield linky

It was a bit heavy carrying it from stamford bridge, i might cut it down to 30" dia. before i go join harold at hastings, hear the froggies have crossed the channel & looks like another barney is brewing...

Cool...how long did it take to find a dog to match the shield?

Does that mean the dish in the stump has to be 5" for a 5" boss?

Nice pattern on the shield.

I think so Bruise, though sure our expert here will answer.

GOtta get an Irish wolfhound to go with the shield. My favorite ugly but beautiful old european styledog. :)

Shows how much I know about dogs...or shields...

Hope you weren't htinking that I was calling that an Irish wolfhound. Better not be, otherwise Kronckew has been cruel and shaved the poor pup bald. :D That's jsut always the dog I think of when I picture myself sitting in grass hut in front of open fire pit, chomping on a leg of mutton and swigging ale.

Yes, I have no life and an active imagination. :)

**my head is still spinning**

y'all are dangerous with how much you know....

Main thing is to use a dia. big enough so that your gauntleted hand can grip the handle & deep enough to give you enough clearance in front (also plan for dents due to hits from your opponent or your hits on him - remember the sheild is also a weapon, hitting 'em with edge or boss is good.) mine is essentially hemi-spherical, tho conical & fluted shapes are OK....

p.s. - dog came first, design is in his honour. - he's not a shaved wolfhound or afghan hound, but a greyhound. (& no, he does'nt race professionally, tho he is FAST - he's a 40mph couch potatoe)

the dish depression in the stump will be relatively shallow and wide, but you'lll note that you can get a shape from it that is much tighter in radius than the depression itself. Peening does that. I used a depression that was perhaps 2 inches ddeep, by 6-8 inches in diameter.

You are a brave man, Bruise, to set out on armoring with little more than some internet advice. If you need some local assistance, look up colleges in yer area for SCA folks or other WMA schools/sports. With any luck, you can hook up with an armorer weho can show you some more complex pieces.

After you give the shield boss a go, I can point you to some links on armor patterns. You'll be ready next to try some elbow cops, vambraces, pauldrons, clashell gauntlets, and helms! Fer those, your basic shaping skills are needed, plus riveting skills (both fixed and sliding, etc).

I gots pix of the arm harness I made, may haft send them yer way...

Kronk, that's quite a war door there! Are you in Regia Anglorum? I bet that 36 incher was quite a haul! I prefer viking centerboss shields in the 20-28 inch diam range, meself, with medieval shields (cross strapped with handle) in the 26-34 inch size.

We'll see how far I get with this project. I might just end up with a mangled piece of steel.

It does sound like fun though. :D
