O/T More Bear talk - Another attack in Alaska

"Authorities don't plan on hunting down the animal because his behavior was consistant with a surprised bear."

Ok. I'll think about that.

The part about being in the last half hour from home/car (whatever) after 42 kilometers kinda gets me. Almost safe.

Scary indeed! So, the apparent assumption is that he is not a bad bear because he was surprised and therefore acting out his nature.... I think!

We had a dog named Bob. He slept on the front porch a lot. One day the neighbor girl, 6 years old, came over alone, to visit us. We were not home. She wanted to borrow sugar for some cookies she was baking. She startled Bob. Bob woke up and bit her. She ran home crying. My day took his 30/30 and the dog out hunting and only my Dad came back.

The dog had never bit anyone before or since... course now he is a dead Bob dog. Seems like he was following his nature and likely not a bad dog! I was about 12 years old... or so. The dog never bit me... never even growled at me. Morale of the story is don't bite anybody if your owner has a 30/30 rifle.... or something like that. Granted, that was a bear... this is a dog story.... but, I think animal nature will sometimes be surprised, every now and then.

Kinda bothers me too!

If I were the kind of person who listened to the experts and their statistics about how rare it is to be attacked by sharks and bears, Id demand that the government prohibit the newspapers from publishing such articles that are obvious lies, owing to the statistical improbablility of their content.

Don't walk up and surprise me...you see...my nature....

well...

This is totally consistent with the way I was raised in West Virginia. My Dad and both Grandads said "Every dog gets one bite!" No dog EVER bit a child, or it was "the walk in the woods". One of my dogs ran off a bank, mouth lolling open, happy to see me after school, tripped and accidentally gashed open my shin for about 4-5". I had to do some fast talking to save that dog, because my grandfather was loading the rifle by the time Mom got a bandage on my shin

You guys have hit it; why err on the bear's side? He now knows he can bite a human and nothing bad happens to him. Park service thinks he'll probably never have a run-in with humans again so let him roam. IF he bites again, the Park Service will deal with it. Try telling that to the next camper who gets mauled.

Having taken two dogs for a "walk in the woods" some years ago...it is a hard job. I think about that every now and again when I get a bit down. Course, now you'd be jailed for doing something you never ever wanted to do. :(

What did this have to do with khukuris?

Ridiculous. John Moses Browning led his People to the Promised land, we know this from the ancient text, and today those Tribes flourish under the NRA banner.

Distantly related... no doubt! I'm sure of it.
Media will usually print anything as long as it's bad. I'm sure of it!
Dead dogs don't lie....... very deep! Or is it surprised dogs don't lie?
Anyway,

Thanks,

And a good dog it was too.... I bet! Did he ever bite again?

I thought that this story would be interesting given our recent discussion about using guns or knives for bear defense. Notice that the group had no less then three guns and four cannisters of bear spray; yet, the attack happens too fast for any of them to get a shot off before the bear hits the kid. I am left with the impression that this was not one of the kids carrying bear spray, and that he had strayed a bit ahead of the group along the trail. This speaks volumes to the need for maintaining march discipline, plus a well armed and vigilent point man, when moving a group through bear country.
