Stallon was on Howard Stern and mentioned that, when he had finished filming First Blood, he thought that it was so bad that he had his agent offer to buy the negative so they could burn it. They finally agreed to edit the film down from 3 hours to 97 minutes. It sounds like close call for Rambo and knifenuts alike.

Hmmm, ...now if we could only get our paws on the extra 83 minutes of fully produced outtakes.

My uncle used to bodyguard for Mr. Stallone and did stunt double work for him in Nighthawks; also showed him how to handle the Lile knives used in those movies. His name is Tony Maffatone, and you can see him in Rocky IV (he's one of the KGB agents watching Sly). He has one of the numbered Liles, which I got to handle as a kid... no wonder I turned into a knife knut!
I'd love to see the extra footage, I wonder if it was closer to the book? Maybe they altered the ending?

Does anyone have the transcript for the final scene where Rambo puts marbles in his mouth before saying the final lines?

The only thing I could make out was, "Nothin' iz ovah. blarg blarg blarg."

Those Rambo movies sure did sell a lot of $10 knives with hollow handles...

Ad Astra :D

NO! I don't have one! I'll own up to a A.C. Khukuri, even a "Cheaper Than Dirt" Gurka Machete (blechh!) but never to a stainless steel "survival" knife with band-aids and fish hooks in the handle - also a BS non-functional "compass".

:barf:  :( ;) :D

I knew a guy in school who used to have one. On occasion he supposedly strapped it on his ankle. Some of us used to kick him there just to see if he was wearing it. Are you carying it? *kick, kick* You got it? *kick to other leg* :D

Hey, now. Back in the day, those were cool.

Especially the wire saw.

I liked First Blood pretty well. Lots of political overtones and a neat mirror to society for the stigma that returning vets had carry for just doing their job in an unpopular war. However, being a little kid in the 80's i'm a little more partial to Rambo: First Blood Part II:) explosions=good
I can just see the fat Hollywood execs sitting in a room trying to come up with the perfect pitch for part 2...
"Ok, guys, all that politcal stuff from FB...CRAP!...we'll stick it at the very beginning and very end in one or two sentences. Let's see, let's see....um, OO! a bow and arrow! Give him a bow and arrow.....that EXPLODES! Yeah, send him back to vietnam to rescue..somebody (not really important) and exact his revenge on the Vietcong...cong?..pong??..chong?? I dunno, i dodged that draft anyway <<room erupts in laughter>>. Anyhoo, he gets the girl...she dies, of course and gives him a jade necklace (We can market little plastic ones that glow in the dark by the MILLIONS). He frees the guys (or whatever). Also, he can't be hit by any of the 3,000,000 bullets shot at him, and he blows up both a guy that is shooting at him (and missing of course) AND a helicopter!...with his bow and arrow. We'll make millions! Someone get me Sly and a 55 gal. drum of body grease!"

I really need to go out and buy the Rambo trilogy of DVD. great movies...except for part three. That was so-so.

The best part about First Blood was the beginning. It set the tone, and there are a couple great scenes where Stallone's character is entering the city in foul weather and being harrassed by the cop. No where to run, no where to go- man against everything.

The rest of the movie is likably histrionic.

Didn't the "Dukes of Hazzard" have an exploding bow & arrow setup? Past Daisy Duke, I don't remember...

Problem with those hollow handle "survival" kits is that you think you have what you need... it would truly s___k to be stranded and dependent on the contents of one of those things.

The book 'First Blood' was way different than the movie. It took place in Kentucky and Rambo was a bit nuts. The sheriff was actually kind of nice to him at first but Rambo had a serious attitude problem. When he escaped he had no fancy knife and was stark, raving naked as he stole the motorcycle and took off. He wound up killing a lot of people, including the sheriff, and eventually began blowing up the town with dynamite. Rambo was killed at the end of the book by Col. Trautman. Trautman didn't know him, he was just a 'cleaner' sent in by the Army.

I have a hollow handle knife I got during the 1980's. It has good Japanese steel with a deep hollow grind and I took it to a young knifemaker, Vince Evans, who is now a well known swordsmith. He determined that the steel was rather good and the aluminum handle was actually cast onto a flared tang so it was rather strong. The tang is about 1/2 the length of the handle. The guy made me a really good leather sheath for it.

I replaced the original compass in the aluminum cap with a better water filled compass. The simple contents in the handle are a small magnesium fire tool, a USGI P38 can opener (surprisingly handy), thread, needles, fishhooks, monofilament fishing line, and a small amount of tissue paper to protect the compass lens from the contents and to be used as emergency tinder. On the sheath is a pouch that holds a 1"x3" diamond hone. That stuff in the handle could be a real life saver if need be. It was also designed so that the knife handle could be the socket for a spear shaft.

The design is very 1980's but I do like the cutting ability of the deep hollow grind. All in all the design is rather usefull. For a mass produced knife it was a good blade. The design didn't sell well and the inventory was blown out through a knife seller that normally sold medium to lower quality knives. They are a very good knife for the money.

I have been looking at another hollow handle knife recently that has really caught my interest. It is the Chris Reeve Sable IV.

I'll be brave and confess on the hollow handled knives.....

My son owns one. :D But, it used to be mine. like all the other kids I got wounds up on Rambo, started figuring out how to make the arrows explode from my old recurve bow (shotgun primer, nail, blackpowder, aluminum shaft)
and HAD to have one of those awesome hollow handled survival knives.

Against his better judgement, my grandfather finally got me one of those and a couple Pakistan lockbacks for my 11th or 12th Birthday. Wouldn'tcha know out of all the nice Cases, Bucks, etc. he gave me those are just about the only three knives I've never managed to lose? I then (supposedly) grew into an adult (more expensive toys) and start trying to mass this collection of quality knives and still have those things looking me in the eye. I have now passed them onto my seven year old son and told him whatever you do, don't lose them! Thinking secretly in my mind they're as good as gone.
That was about a year ago now, and he could show me where all three are within a few seconds...

I thought the original First Blood was pretty good as far as movies go. I still wish they'd give it another try and stick more closely to the book though, I don't think it would be too upsetting for todays society.

I want to clarify before someone dings me... yet again.

Someone gave me a "survival shovel" with a hollow handle, knowing I hunt, camp & spend time in woodsy places. What the overseas maker put in the handle would not be of great help if needed. Even the shovel itself was junk- a saw edge that couldn't cut, an opener that wouldn't, etc.

There was a real good "What's in my day pack" thread not long ago that covers real well what essentials are a good idea for situations involving an involuntary stay in the wilds. Just tried to find & the search wasn't working.

Some things NOT in my "survival shovel" handle:

Water purification tabs, P-38 can opener, StarFlash signal mirror, Silva compass, BlastMatch firestarter... the list goes on & is found in that good 'ol thread.

Hmm. Come to think, I do have a hollow handle knife: a Cold Steel "Bushman" spearhead/knife deal.

And there used to be a broadhead that took a .22 magnum hollowpoint through the middle- it would explode bangstick style on impact. Super-illegal for hunting, wonder what/who they were for... Rambo or the Dukes?

I've got a couple of knives with hollow handles...one is a Randall Mk 18 (I personally think they should have used this knife in the first "Rambo" movie.) and the other is a Chris Reeve "Shadow V". I really like them both but the only one that gets used much is the "Shadow V". I like the fact that it's made from one solid billet of steel.

This reminds me of the days when you could actually carry a pocketknife to school and not worry about it.
