So I've been getting interested in Philippine knives, and have been scouring Ebay for what I could afford. Not the top of the line stuff, but interesting pieces. Well this guy had this big knife, and I bought it for a song. He listed the dimensions, but I thought they must be mistaken. Well they were. It's even bigger than described. It's 28 1/2" overall, with a 4 1/2" WIDE  by .275" thick blade! The sucker weighs 5lbs.-6 oz.! Move over HI Bowie! Now I know this is a tourist piece, but it has a Massive piece of Carabao horn for a handle with a through-tang, peened on the butt. It looks like there is lead poured into the horn handle around the tang. The brass guard looks actually cast onto the blade.

You're probably thinking this is an April fools joke, but it's not! This monstrosity was waiting for me when I got home today. What a hoot! Take care my friends.

Steve

PS. the funny look on my face is me straining to hold this thing up while my son fiddled with the camera. :D

You should send that to Sisco for a sheath.

That looks like a pretty handy knife for skinning whales and the occasional brontosaur.

It actually came with a rudimentary leather sheath. A water buffallo is walking around somewhere with half his ass missing! :D

Ok, somebody has to say it: Now that's a knife!!! Steve--you mention that it's a tourist piece. Do you think it's functional? Looks like it would make one heck of a chopper.

Well I just assumed it was a tourist piece. But I just took a file to the edge, and while it will cut it, it's definitely hardened. Maybe 50-55 Hrc. Like a good machete. Dawgone. Just looking at this makes you grin. It's so......bizarre.

:D Well, if you're ever attacked by pirates, I think you've got things covered. If you feel like taking more pictures, I'd love to see a closeup of the handle.

By the look on your face the knife needs some levity too ;)

Fantasic piece, looks like a hell of a blade, functional or not I'd love one of those on my desk!

If it's just a letter opener, I don't want to see the mail!

ps: The fat lady has sung...

Pretty impressive, but with such a heavy massive blade I would be fearful that the tang would shear off inside the handle after one or two major chops. I mean in order for the tang to be as large proportionally as say the tang is to the blade on an 18" AK, the handle would have to be so big you couldn't hold it. Maybe the knife maker guys on the forum could speak to that issue. (?)

I would love to have that thing for my collection. I don't know how you would really fight with it though; after one huge killer swing a little guy with a Siru or Kobra or GS could cut you 3 or 4 new ones while you were still on your follow-through!

Thanks for sharing.

Regards,

Norm
