I have a bunch of scraps of 5160 and O1 and would like to use them to make a pattern welded billet and make a knife from it. I'm not experienced at pattern welding or forge welding but I have a qualified teacher who can get me up to speed.

My question is multi faceted. Has anyone here used 5160 and O1 in a pattern weld? What is your opinion of this combination? Does anybody have pictures of this combination of steels so I can evaluate the contrast of the two steels?

As always I appreciate any information you guys can furnish and than you in advance for the help and opinions!

haven't made 5160 o1 damascus, but you can test for contrast the way I do; stick to pieces together with superglue, grind (keep it cool, superglue doesn't like heat) and etch. it won't be exactly how they'll look laminated, but it'll be pretty close.

From what I understand, those two steels are a little too similar in composition to get much of a decent pattern. Use those pieces, but throw a little L6 or 15N20 in with it, and you'll be fine.
