I had a friend at work mention that he needed a new hunting knife back before the summer. Well, I started work on it way back then but then he found out his dishwasher was broken and had been spilling water behind their cabinets and under the flooring. Needless to say his whole floor needed to be replaced and he couldnt afford to buy the knife this past season. So, it went on the back burner for a bit but I was able to get back in the shop for a bit and finished it off this past week. The sheath is better than I've made before (trust me I know I need practice) and is actually a little thicker. I found out there is a Tandy store near me and bought some cheap pieces.. I probably won't do that again. :-) Let me know what you think. O1 steel, brass, Ebony and sycamore that I won from Burl source last year (thanks again mark, oh and the box showed up today! Thanks much!) Oh and I made the pin as well.

Cool. It's really great of you to make that knife for your friend. Looks like it will provide him with years of service. Kudos!

I like the two woods together, they look good. Does sycamore always have that pattern in it or is it a special piece of wood?

What is the thickness of the O1 you used? It doesn't seem as thick as many knives I've seen, and I say this because I tend to use 1/8" stock myself. Like good old Nessmuck, I prefer the thinner blades for my concept of a hunting knife.

I think your friend is getting a real nice knife to carry.

It is 1/8", that's pretty much all I use, although I have a piece of 1/4 and 3/16. I cut the sycamore out of a larger piece that I won from Mark at Burl source and the pattern was all like that and had that colour variation but another piece I have (again from Mark hehe) is much lighter but still has the pattern. In person the pattern is even more pronounced. Except for being rather soft, it is nice to work and does look good with the ebony. I am pleased with how it turned out.

I like the look of the sycamore next to the ebony.
Good looking knife.

With sycamore the pattern will vary. The closer it is cut to quartersawn (faces are at a right angle to the growth rings) the more pronounced the pattern will be.

Thanks Mark and Paul, it was the first hidden tang and gave me a little hassle. I like the colour of the sycamore and I was surprised when I saw the pale one in the box Mark. I still have another piece from the block you sent me, can't wait to use it.
