Hey there folks.
I am looking to get my hands on some 5/32 or 3/16 O1 tool steel stock and am having a heck of a time doing so. I have called multiple steel fabricators in my area and so far they have fallen through.
There is on online supplier from Alberta but they are hit and miss with their inventory- currently just have 1/4".
I am located in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, and am trying to avoid paying an arm and a leg for shipping. Any thoughts/recommendations? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, take care,

-Levi L.

Give rob a call at Canadian knifemaker, often he has stock not listed on the website. Skookum tools located in Sidney bc has some I believe. The service is great but the site and their search function is total garbage. So it's best to call. They have a ton of sizes and their prices are pretty good too. Rob is the guy you want to talk to there if possible. Shipping from them was super fast on anything I have bought from them.

ROb is my first call for steel. If I need O1 immediately, I go to the local metal supermarkets. The branch in my area has a wide selection of O1, and sometimes has W1 drill rod.

Although they wont have it, they can order it to the store.

Stacy mentioned, driving to get something is often more expensive than it is to get it shipped, but our shipping rates are much higher.

It seems now anything from the states is $40 + because they are using some sort of built in customs service too

Instead of fabricators, that means steel cutting bending and welding to me, try the machine shops

They probably won't want to sell to you, but ask who their suppliers are.

Give KBC tools a call.Last month, I needed some 1/16 round O1 and was surprised they had stock.

Another placed to get O1 would be www.onlinemetals.com
A Tip - There are some online coupons around to get various discounts 10% off for first timers.

KBC has plenty of O1. Though they ship from the US (even when you order from a canadian store if you're not picking up) so be warned the freight might be slightly higher than expected.

There are also Bohler/Uddeholm stores all over Canada I believe (called 'The Steel Store') that stock O1 precision ground and they're very nice to work with. Very high quality surface grinding. As good or better than Starret's grinding.

Canadian Knifemaker is great, never had an issue there.

Online Metals also have a good range of tool steels, though I generally won't buy a single bar from them as the shipping is more. If you're buying a few bars then it's worth it. Be warned that the A2 I bought from them was made by Precision Marshall and seemed to have a number of smallish dings in the surface that clearly happened before the packaging, not sure if their O1 would be the same. It didn't cause a problem for me, but I could see that it might if I got less lucky about where the dings were...
