I am new to the form and just had a question on heat treating O1 tool steel. What is a good heat source to accomplish this task? I have read several articles on the heat treating process, but none of the articles that I have read really talk about the actual heat source. Any information would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you,
Mike

I use a Oxy/Adec torch set up. I think MAPP gass will work on smaller stuff.
What he source to you have access to?

I do have access to a Oxy/Adec torch. I have never used it in heat treating, can you give me an over view of the step that I need to take and I will try it out? Thanks for the help.

Get into a dark shop or outside, preheat your quench oil to 140 degrees.
Get a magnet to check for nonmagnetic. When the blade is heated up so much that the magnet no longer is drawn to it you are ready to quench.

The color sill be a cherry red to bright cherry. It is WAY easy to overheat the blade this way and also just as easy to not let the steel soak enough. If you see that the scale has busted off after you quench thats a good sign.

I am sure there will eb plenty of others that can addanyhting I may have forgotten.
Feel free to email me at home friend.....
