Many of you took part in my troubles with O1 thread. Here's an update:
Because I don't have much of this steel, anyway, I used some scraps from profiling the blade, and cut a few pieces off the "O1" bar. Heated to critical, quenched in warm ATF, and they hardened just fine. Why the knife I made won't do the same? I don't know. I'm making a larger knife from the material this week and I'm thinking that the 3/16" size will translate to better hardening on a knife with a 3.5" blade than a 2" blade. Let's hope so, at least. I still think I was getting residual heat from the handle of the knife creeping into the blade and tempering it. When I get around to it I'll send the knife to Brian and he can play with it some.

Maybe I misunderstand, but how will there be residual heat from the handle when you quench the ENTIRE blade?
I'm reading that you do Not quench the entire blade, then temper the handle of the knife afterward?

All of my knives are edge quenched. I'll quench the whole blade if I clay coat, but I've been told that clay coating an O1 blade may be a waste of time, so I'm going just for a regular edge quench now.

On edge quenching, You put just a part of the edge in initially to get the full hardening, then after a bit of time,, quench the entire blade to get the blade to come down in temp to partially harden the back and handle...
