Which is overall tougher/more durable for a knife that will see hard use? Which will hold the longest edge at the same hardness? Thanks for the info!

One of the most valuable things I have purchused during my very short knife making endevour is 'Heat Treatment, Selection, And Application Of Tool Steels'. It is concise, well layed out and great for learning and as a shop reference. This book will answer most your questions concerning high carbon steels. Both A2 and O1 are included among others that knife makers are interested in. I paid 32 bucks for it and got it through Enco, who has a web site.

I think we had this discussion before. Most people say A2 is a little tougher and hold a slightly better edge. However, O1 can be differentially tempered giving it an edge in some applications.

A2 will be better bet for a hard working blade.

And thats coming from a guy who uses alot of O1.

I believe Rob Simonich and perhaps others have experimented with differntial hardning of A2, by torching the spine to soften it after hardening. I cannot find the thread with this information, perhaps someone else knows where?
