oak handle question

Oak has a fairly coarse grain, so there is potential for moisture changes to effect it. If you have it sealed with something it should be fine though.

I soak the handle in boiled linseed oil. I got the idea from a knifemaking video that I saw. Because I'm cheap (and poor) I put the oil in a baggy, covered the handle, and left it for several days. The handles that I made from some black walnut I had on hand have survived in the kitchen for a couple of years.
I'm sure it would work better if you could draw a vacuum then add pressure while the linseed oil covered the handle.
Still trying, Lynn

I have found that the longer you can let it soak in the oil generally the better. It will of course eventually be completly saturated and any time further than that will not really gain anything. I started treating my wooden items like axe handles with motor oil (new) after talking to a couple of people who used to work in the steel mills mention that the local police used to keep a stash of batons soaking in the bottom of the oil pits.
