Oakley or Rudy Project? Help!

I've had my LASIK done at the Singapore Eye Centre both yesterday and today and am recovering well. My sights are pretty hazy now but the doc said they'll clear up in a couple of weeks. Haven't had my post-ops eye sight checked but I believe they should be good (Everything looks fantastically clear, relative to what I've experienced). I sure don't miss wearing glasses (have been doing that for 25 years) .

I'm looking for a decent pair of sunglasses. I've bought a pair of Ray-Ban #3163 to keep in the car (glass lens = no warping under Singapore heat) .

I'm deciding either between a Oakley X Metal XX or Rudy Project Ketyum, Carbon (http://www.rudyproject.com.sg/ketyum.asp). Lower down my list is the Oakley Remeo as the nose bombs are not too fitting for me.
Currently, I'm leaning towards the Ketyum due to the adjustable nose piece (my asian features -read flat nose- will NOT allow plastic Oakleys ) and the spare lens.

Any comments or recommendations before I commit my hard earned $$.

While I don't have either one of the models you are interested in I do own both Oakleys(2 M-Frame, E-Wire, A-Wire and Zeros) and a Rudy Project Freeon.

I like the Oakley's lens quality and overall looks. I especially like their M-frame Heater clear lens, which is my lens of choice when I'm shooting indoors, low light or reloading.

The RP is a much lighter then the M-Frame. I find it more comfortable to wear for long periods. The Laser Black is a lighter tint then Oakley's Iridium lense which make them more suitable for me when I shoot. And I like the fact that I can adjust the arms on the RP to fit under my hat and often around my electronic ear muffs.

As for the nose piece, my Asian nose doesn't notice much of a different between the 2 company's design. :)

I've been a big oakley fan over the years (all the way back to blade & razor blades, does anyone remember the guitar pick?) , but they have become a fashion brand more than a tool. I have swtiched to Julbo, I suggest looking into Julbo. they are a tool & perfect for me. glasses for mountain climbing.

I would have to disagree with you on this comment. I have been wearing Oakleys for the past year and while they do look good and I look good wearing them, they still serve a purpose. I wear the Half jackets and I have 4 pairs of lenses I can switch out; each has their specific purpose. Gold polarized Iridium for fishing, yellow for shooting, clear for yard or wood work, VR28 lenses for mountain biking. They have been used by professional motorcross riders, surfers, mountain bikers, BMXers, skateboarders, climbers...you name it. They serve a purpose, just not yours. And what is wrong with looking good while doing something you like?

I've been using a pair of Oakley X-Metal XX sunglasses since September of 1998. Best pair of shades I've ever invested in. Near bomproof construction. I've had to replace the nosebombs and earsocks due to wear, but that's about it. I bought my wife a pair, too. :) You can customize the fit of the XX with thicker/thinner nosebombs and hinge wedges.

I overstepped my bounds a bit maybe, the thing that i really dont like is the clear & tinted frames as i have super sensitive eyes, I need a lot of coverage & literally they havent made a pair i can wear since they made trench coats in the late 90's. maybe I'm just bitter.

my current pair is Julbo Epic Sunglasses - Alti Spectron X6
blocks 95% of light ( if you believe the company line anyway)

I prefer the O's......I get mine from my brother in law, he gets an invite to the twice a year open house for employees, so I get them dirt cheap, based on what they have to offer (no Mag switches, Romeo's, Juliet's,or other top o' the line stuff ) but when I can get a pr of twenty's, or minutes for $30, and M Frames for $40, I aint picky. I bought a pr of monster dog's retail, and am very satisfied. My M Frames are for shooting. and I have a pr of eye jackets with "persimmon" (orange/amber) lenses for shooting as well.

i bought a pair & sent them back. clear frames w/ black iridium...i just can't
hack it the sun kills me when i have clear frames.

but i am on black iridium w/ black frames, like white on rice.
maybe i could buy 2 pair and making a hybrid

Matte Black Grey Polarized
(first pair)
Black Fade Black Iridium
(second pair)

and use the Matte black frames w/ Black iridium lenses,
then i could make another hybrid from what's left over
(grey poloraized lenses + black fade frame) & sell it on ebay.
problem solved!

thank you,

YOU ARE A GENIUS K.V. Collucci !

or should i say that you've came to the rescue again.

If you want to swap lenses get the Half Jackets. These and the M frames are the only models with replaceable lenses. Buy a pair with your preferred lens and then just buy replacement lenses and swap them in and out. And at $40 a set it's relatively cheap. That's what I do. It beats having to buy 3 pairs of glasses for different applications. You can use the XLJ lenses or the standard lenses in the Half Jacket frame. I have 2 pair of HJ's, one gloss black and the other bronze. I swap out the lenses on an almost daily basis.

I should note that Oakleys process their polarized lenses different than others. Most companies layer the polarizing between the lenses like a sandwich. This causes problems because the polarized layer can split and cause lighter lines in the lens. Oakley coats the lense with a liquid fusion process that prevents that from happening which means you get a lens with better clarity and less shadowing.

Thanks guys for the info!

I've made up my mind..... I'll get both!!! RP for the fit and Oakley for the techno and most importantly...the coolness! :D

Wonder how am I going to break this news to the wife.... :p

G'day Sean,

Just curious how your eyes are after the LASIK surgery, I had mine done about 5 years ago, the best $4500 dollars I have ever spent. Today my vision is slightly better than 20/20.

Stockman:

My eye sights are still a bit unstable. They can be pretty ok (maybe even 20/20) but will turn hazy/blur the next moment. Maybe that's due to the dryness.

However, I wouldn't really worry about it as I just had them done on Monday and Tuesday so that's really less than a week after surgery. Considering my eyesight was pretty bad to begin with (850~875 "degrees" per eye with astics (sp?)), I'm quite happy with the result.

I still wake up in the morning, open my eyes and thought that I left my contacts in again !!! :D

By the way, I just bought a pair of Oakley Plate (coolness factor) and an RP Ketyum (techno wow!). My funds just hit rock bottom!
