Just got this one from the Fed Ex man who got it from Les Robertson........ANOTHER great transaction with Les!:D

This model 2 has S30V steel that has a satin finish, and this is a hand-rubbed satin finish. The grind on it is higher than any other I have seen and these grinds are perfect on both sides from tip to end. Cuts like a razor. Lock up is 100%, with no movement in any direction and the liner bar is grooved to facilitate closing. The bolsters also have a hand-rubbed satin finish. The handle material is carbon fiber and this cf has a satin look to it and is very comfortable to grip. The duller black cf along with the satin titanium and steel are VERY pleasing to the eye.

There is just something about the wide short blade on the large model 2 that I really like. Of course almost 3&3/4" is not exactly short. The handle has the same width and height from front to back and a slight drop at the back. This along with the wide blade gives the knife a very distinctive look.

All in all another great model 2 from Mike O. I just can't wait for my large model 2 framelock to get done!

I like it Art, nice Obbie for sure, but heck you need a digicam, so you can post your own pictures, easier to sell your knifes and most of all more fun for us, you really do buy a lot of high end folders! :D hehe

All you have to do is not buy the next $400+ custom folder, wait a minute now i know why you don't have a digicam. LOL

Cheers!
James

Thanks Notdos! I really do appreciate it. The Obie got carried today and is as outstanding in the pocket as out. Rides deep and is very comfortable. I have been playing with it again today....the knife, that is, and I noticed that when you close the blade it, like those I have from J.W. and Kit, just seems to get"sucked" in for the last 1/2" of travel and seats itself as the liner and ball detent comes over. The new Obie does this with a gentle and audible snap. You can actually hear the liner come over and engage the blade with the ball detent. My others don't quite do this. This is not a complaint, rather a compliment for such accurate and precise workmanship. I am becoming a real sucker for the carbon fiber also. I never did like the material but I had never had a knife with it. I think I got a preconceived notion about this material and never really gave it a try. Now that I have gotten the Smith's with it and this Obie-makes 5 folders with it-I have really come to like it.

Now the digicam. I actually have one and an 18 year old son who knows how to use it, it is the getting him to show "poor-ole dad" how to use it that I am having difficulty with. Sems like the 1997 Toyota Tacoma is a bit more important these days!!

BUT I WILL PERSERVERE.........I'll get Dexter to take the pics!!:D :D

You're gittin' too freakin' many of those broken knives there Art! :D You're going to have to get a vest like Dex's (Oh MY! ) to carry them. Like the new one just like the last one ( I may eventually forgive you for getting that Smith LS-1 a couple days days before I had the funds! Actually very happy with Deryk Munroe Typhoon wound up with - will try to get some pics ASAP. Also #2 on Mayo's list for an XX-LRG recurve TNT - looking forward to that one soon. Do us a favor tho' Art please? Leave a few of those Smith's & Obie's for the rest of us - not nice to corner the market! :D :D :D

Enjoy that great knife!

Bill you will have to have a look at the newest JW Smith I traded for. Got it from Gene. It is the LDC-5 with some customization done by JW to make it a real one-of-a-kind! How about stag scales and a full titanium spacer bar!! Man can't wait till it comes........TOMORROW!!!

........the LS-1"Eighties" is my other carry knife right now. I sort of alternate between it and the LS-1 Recurve. Both of these have a great handle shape. Btw 2 did you ever contact JW about doing a second one like I have ordered?

Since this is an Obenauf thread lets get back to the main topic! Been carrying the Obie since it came and it just gets sweeter and sweeter. The action has smoothed up a little although it was buttery smooth to start with. I think I have just gotten used to the thumbstuds since I was carrying the Smith's and they all have a disc.
That big wide blade just continues to amaze me. I used it in the kitchen the other night slicing tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, and peppers. Sliced through everything with ease. Even though it has a thicker than normal blade; 5/32" instead of 1/8" blade, the wider blade was not a problem since the edge just slid through everything. I've noticed that all the custom folders I have, and all are either Obenauf's, Smith's, or Carson's, have a dropped rear or a handle that curves down at the butt end. This makes holding and using the knives very, very comfortable.

I can't find a thing to fault on the Obie. Believe me I've tried! A couple years ago it was slight problems with custom knives that drove me to the Sebenza. But since finding Mike Obenauf, John W. Smith, and "rediscovering" Kit Carson, I have not had a desire to carry anything but one of their knives! They are that GOOD. :D :D :D

It's been a couple of weeks now with the Obie and I have to say it is just getting better and better. This is a great carry knife and even greater user. Everything about it just..... FITS! I'm not sure Mike CAN improve this basic knife, I mean can Kit really IMPROVE on the model 4? The only thing I am going to have done is to have Mike replace the micarta spacer with a steel spacer, and I am doing the same thing on my J.W. Smith's. The bolsters are slightly rounded top and bottom as are the handle slabs to make the knife extremely comfortable in the hand. Everything is put together with near seamless construction, and again the shape of the blade and handle just flow from one end to the other. It is one of those knifes that you immediately sense is going to be a keeper, and a great user. The action is still as crisp as it was when I got it and should be expected to be! It still tickles me to close this knife and hear and feel the liner snap over! Just seems like an extra mark of workmanship to me.

I just can't say enough about Mike Obenauf as a maker of fine cutlery, but he is going to have the best ahead of him and to me, with what I have a;lready seen and held, that is mind boggling!:) :D

I don't leave home without it!! I can't think of any reason to get any other using pocket knife. I just can't.
Greg

Indeed Greg, they are great users along with being great lookers. The best part is that they are built as tough as any custom knife out there and have such excellent fit and finish. I really like the wide blade Mike puts on this model and the way it contrast with the handle. This is a real handful of knife for a sub 4" bladed knife. Really , really looking forward to the large model 2 framelock Mike is doing for me!
