Is their such a thing available for civilians to carry automatics or knives which exceed the legal length limit? I asked my attorney, and he said that he wasn't aware of anything like that, just for consealed firearm carry. (CCW?) If their is such an animal, how does one go about obtaining one? Thanks.

There are some states where a concealed carry permit for a gun also allows one to freely carry sharp objects, and others where the permit only applies to guns, but I've never heard of a knife permit. When seen as weapons, knives are traditioanlly seen as more disreptuable than guns.

I have another question: Do you have to have CCV for every state separately? What if you travel a lot?? Which state is the best for getting CCV??

I'm no expert on this, far from it, but I believe CCW permits are valid only for the state of issue and you have to be a resident. Laws vary from state to state. A lot of states have reciprocity with nearby states. For example if you obtain a resident permit in CT, then just mailing a copy to NH will get you a NH non-resident one. I'm from MA and it is difficult to get one, especially for protection. Bottom line, you must know the laws in each state you are planning to tread in. VT requires no permits for anything. Sorry, this isn't the appropriate forum for this...

A knife is by default a tool, it's only a weapon when a human chooses to make it so.

One last thought, to answer the 'travel alot' question, you need to contact the state police or dept. of safety with each state ahead of time and tell them you are carrying while traveling and most have temporary permits. Also, the Volkner McClure act says if the firearms are stored locked in the trunk and not loaded, you are legal. I don't know if I'd want to test it in court though.

Um ... I'm afraid the answer to each question is going to begin "some states"....

Some states have language in the CCW law expressly permitting CCW holders to carry knives that would otherwise be illegal to carry. Most don't.

Can you imagine a DA trying to explain to a jury that although you're authorized to carry a gun, he's asking them to put you in jail for carrying a knife with a blade an inch longer than the law allows?

Some states have negotiated agreements to recognize each other's CCWs, and some states have passed laws to officially recognize CCWs issued by any state that has the requirements they do even if that state doesn't officially recognize CCWs they issue.

Can you imagine a DA trying to explain to a jury that although you have a CCW issued by your own state and you meet all the requirements to get one in this state (except residence, if that's a requirement for CCW in that state), he wants them to put you in jail for carrying while you were on vacation in their state?

Some states issue CCWs to nonresidents, including residents of states that either don't issue them at all or issue only to people who pay large bribes^H^H^H^H^H political campaign contributions. Getting a nonresident CCW from Florida is said to involve the least hassle and expense (issuing nonresident CCWs is still a very profitable business for the state of Florida, but they don't charge as much as some states (I'm talking about fees here, not bribes -- you don't have to bribe anyone to get a Florida CCW.)) I don't recall just what states officially recognize Florida CCWs, but you can find out at www.recguns.com or at www.nra.org In fact if you have any interest at all you ought to go to both of those sites; there's a lot more information there than you'll ever get from this thread....

There's at least one state with a law on the books about something called a "dangerous weapons permit" which authorizes carrying such things as swords (Connecticut). It's said to be very rarely issued if ever, much rarer than a permit to carry a gun.

Can anyone tell me how to go about obtaining a CCW or at least inquiring about one in my area? I've contacted the county sheriff to ask him several questions about the local laws, but he hasn't returned my call, in almost 6 months!!!

Guess I can rest assured he's not gonna be calling me back.

...also, does anyone know the requirements for obtaining one?

Go to the links I posted ... I don't know anything about Missouri, but the NRA and the rec.guns guys do. If you have any more questions after reading what's on the web your best bet is to post them on rec.guns

P.S. It sounds like that county sheriff who isn't answering your calls might be one of those issuing officials who try to obstruct the law and issue only when forced to (some of them don't issue to civilians who haven't paid a bribe until they get a court order to).... If that's what's going on ... the guys in the NRA and on rec.guns can help you; they can tell you what the situation is in your state and county, what your next step should be ... they can help you, and they'll be glad to. (Join the NRA if you haven't already.)

Then again it could be he's just too busy to return calls or his answering machine doesn't work or something like that. In my experience leaving messages for bureaucrats is seldom a worthwhile use of time ... I deal with bureaucrats either in person or by certified mail; I don't usually even try the phone any more.

One more tip -- join a local rod & gun club! That'll help you more than anything, in a lot of ways -- advice, references, most of all, as a matter of politics -- maybe whoever's responsible (it might not be the sheriff; might be the town police chief) can afford to obstruct and annoy you, but can he afford to annoy the whole club?
