I have Griptilian tanto folder and it cuts ok but not as well as some thinner blades.Even though I convexed the edge it still doesnt cut really well because of the grind and thickness of blade.Should I thin the edge bit more or is it usual for this type(thick tanto) to not cut well materials like cardboard etc.The blade is razor sharp...Should I just buy griptilian drop point with hollow grind or regrind this blade(its some kind of saber grind, i like it for fixed blades but on folder seems unnessesary).

You'll have to run the convex well up onto the sabre grind portion of the blade if you want to reduce its drag on stuff like cardboard. Their excellent steel and heat treat become a real PITA for this operation. I did it to one of my older Benchmade tantos and it made a huge difference. FWIW, most of their drop points are sabre ground as well. You'll need to remove a lot of metal on those to get the type of performance increase you're looking for too. I used to really love Benchmade, but as I started to notice how they grind the blades on a lot of their models, I started turning to other Mfgs that use a thinner grind.

I've been in the habit of using a guided rig like the Aligner to put a new, shallower bevel on blades before I attempt to convex them. I usually go as shallow as the clamp will allow, because convexing will usually make the edge a bit 'thicker' than whatever bevel existed prior. As mentioned, it does take some time to initially grind away all that extra steel. But the results are almost always worth it, in the end.

I love the knife in general, and steel quality, but plan to buy other 550model drop point or doug ritter model with s30v....

BM's for the most part pretty much suck right out of the box as far as the factory edge goes. I know some of them are ok and some are actualy good but on the average, most would agree that they need help, but hey most blades right out of the box do. thinning the primary bevel on your BM is a good thing, give it a try and I think you will like the knife much better. By the way, I have had 40 plus BM's through the years and out of all of them I only had one D2 960 that I liked the grind and the edge on..... go figure.

True, BM does needs to do something about their factory grinds, but once reprofiled, they kick ass.
BM should take a page out of Spyderco's book on grinding.

True, not knocking BM at all. Just the half ass way the grind and release their knives "out of the box'.
I work my BM's EDC and love them after a little TLC :-)

i have contacted bm quality control several times trying to get them to do something to improve their edges. i think it was a woman i talked to so that did a lot of good .
