OK, I've got my JS test knife done. Arranged today to test weekend after next. Now all I have to do is get my 5 knives ( and a few extras, and some to sell.....) done in time for Blade.
Problem is, the last three blades I have ground, had inclusions that turned up at 400 grit. Ground the hell out of them and they just kept getting smaller, then bigger, then almost gone..... then bigger..:grumpy: :grumpy:

One in a while, I can understand. Dind't think much of it, the second, was frustrating, by the third (in a row!!) I'm starting to get a complex...

I finally figured out what it was. I think these were all blades I had forged two years ago at the blade school. I came back with 13 ready to grind and just haven't got around to some of them yet. I had occlusions in the knives I finished while there. Same batch of steel.....
I identified the rest of that batch and came close to throwing them in the creek, but ended up marking them well, and saving them for a friend who is starting out. Give him something to practice his grinding on....
Ready to start fresh with new steel. Just hate to think of all the hours that just got wasted though:jerkit: Well, Live and learn......

I know you people in Binghamton are different but they are called "inclusions" and are either oxides or sulphides. Also referred to as 'dirty ' steel .You'll find fewer inclusions with bearing quality or aircraft quality steels.

Thanks Mete! I appreciate the heads up. I hate it when I use language incorrectly.... When I think of bearing steel, 5210 comes to mind, but I have no idea what they use in airplanes. Any of the same stuff we use for forging?

And to be more honest, I'm living the good life here in beautiful Windsor. Binghamton is just the nearest place anyone's heard of. We're close enough to shop ect, but far enough not to have close neighbors and I can target shoot off the back porch. If i tried that in Binghamton.....somebody would shoot back:rolleyes:

Ok, now I 've got to find my wife's dictionary and find out what the hell Occlusions are:rolleyes: :D

An occlusion closed, clouds, or covers something.Dentists use the term to describe how teeth line up.

You have just experienced a nightmare that plagued me for years. As a suggestion, try some of Dan Gray's 5160, absolutely clean and reliable.

Been through the same thing here too Ed. Very discouraging but, it's also a good excuse to rough finish them and do some extra testing.
