Hey all, I’m about to be lucky to live 300 yards away from the ocean, I have a few knives in S30V and vg10 steel that are collectors items some are coated some are not. These are stored in cases and don’t get used my question is if I never use these particular knives do I need to still use some sort of preotection or oil on them since I’ll be so close to the ocean? Regards Hermit. Also will marine tuf cloth or similar protectants discolour dlc coatings?? Cheers!

I live in hot, humid, brackish water environment in Florida, I coat my blades, handles, and leather sheaths with Obenauf's Heavy Duty leather preservative.

Been using it for a number of years with excellent results; Adventure Sworn Knives recommend it on their website.

My opinion is any knife that’s not used and is store away should have a light film of protectant on all metal surfaces.

Thanks for the advice guys just coated with marine tuff glide as it was readily available I just hope it does not mess up the black coating!

For storage this.

Wash blade before cutting any food.

Another layer of protection is oil paper or oil cloth. Check out "VCI rust inhibitor paper". Coming from the J-knife world, I use camelia oil.
The think is, air circulates & humidity does balance out, so you do need protection.
Remember to clean & re-oil your knives every do often. Oil does evaporate and dry.

I live near the ocean as well, I use Swan mineral oil quite a bit for maintenance and storage. I also recommend using dessicant in your storage to trap any moisture in the air, and also do not store your knives with the leather sheath.
