Hi im ne to blade forum and me and my buddies are planning a charity hike for wounded warriors project. But need some help were gonna be following interstate 80 and trying to find out where to go for the knife laws in these states. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, California. What im needing is what size knife can i carry on my belt passing through these statesor will my pa carry permit be honored in some of these states with a knife. AND isn't therean a lawknife that protectsdidnt people justthinking passing through. My plan is to take an esse 5. Hoping it will be okay. Any info you can give me is appreciated.

Welcome.

Sounds like a fun hike and worthy cause.

You should be fine in Pa.

For your CA portion, just carry it openly at the waist and you'll be fine per state law. Municipalities will vary so you'll have to actually look up each city and county you'll pass through.

A lot of this might depend on what you are going to look like. The cops around here aren't going to bother a a clean cut looking tourist/hiker/backpacker with a reasonable sheath knife on his belt. But, on the other hand, he looks like some kind of psycho vagrant, they will probably want to "interview" him a little closer. A common version of the story goes they interview the trekker, find grass in his pack when they ask to look and then declare the knife a dangerous weapon. After all, what other reason would a crazy drug addict carry one for?

No. That's for firearms. (unloaded ones), "safe passage" part of Firearm Owners Protection Act. There really aren't any federal knife laws except for the mostly misunderstood switchblade one.

Ok so i've contacted new Jersey, Pennsylvania,Ohio, indiana,Illinois,Iowa, wyoming,Utah,Nevada, california. And basically everybody said size is not a problem as long as its not an auto and were using in a camping manner. except. New Jersey said just keep in your pack when come into more populated areas. Ohio said nothing over 4" blade. And illinois said nothing over 5" and to keep in the pack. And I kind of figured this from Wyoming but when I talked to the state police there he kind of laughed when I said knife laws. We dont got no knife laws. Lol I thought that was funny.

And you were right alot of states said if you look like trouble then you'll have issues otherwise not a prob.
