ATTN: Gentlemen of the great Northern and Central and Eastern Ohio region. (All Western Pennsylvanians and others also welcome!)
You are cordially invited to attend a NE Ohio Busse Knife Scout meeting and festivities!
Lifetime membership granted with the attendance of only one meeting!
This will probably last meeting of the year - Oct. 28 Sunday, 11AM
Please make sure you arrive before noon! (see below) If can't make it before noon, but still want to attend, email Joe. (see below)
It's going to be a little different this time. We are not meeting in the woods.
Chuck is coming up to meet with Joe at his house in CANTON to talk leather and knives, since Chuck is a leather person, and Joe is a knife person. (Joe does some leather too!)
Joe has a good sized shop in his garage, and he's happy to have us meet up at his house.
Everyone is welcome to arrive at 11 until noon, when we'll go out to lunch at one of Joe's favorite Mexican restaurants. OR maybe later, depending on what happens. Anyone interested in learning basic knifemaking and leather skills will be pleased to know that Chuck and Joe will be happy to answer any questions until late in the afternoon, if need be. Also, if you have any knives that need a touching up, bring them along. Joe will help you clean them up.
ALSO, VERY IMPORTANT!!!!! Bring your choppers, Joe is going to have a few chopping and cutting contests and will be giving away at least one of his custom camp knives as prize! Maybe others too! He said he will give away the prize no matter how many people stay home......
So please stay home so I'll have a great chance to win his knife!
(just kidding. ;))
CONTACT INFO: Please do not contact me, unless you cannot get hold of Joe (give him at least 2 days to get back to you). He doesn't want his address posted, so please email him with a request for direction, and any questions you might have.
.
Last thing.... AGAIN this is YOUR event, YOUR knife party. Anyone who has any ideas is welcome to ask Joe or post here.
If I've missed anything, email myself, or Joe.
Also, please check with Joe before you decide your dog along. It might be an issue if all of us want to go to a restaurant.

If I left anything out... Chuck, Joe or anyone else, please post.

Errr...Sounds like fun:eek:

Are there going to be free hot dogs again?

Haven't made it to any of the Ohio meets yet, but seeing as I live in North Canton maybe I can find my way to this one.

Hey, sounds like fun! Glad to see someone else step up and organize an event. I heard steelnut might do a pig roast at his place! Next we can expect Amy to bake some cheesecake and invite us over. :D

but I did kinda like the alliteration of the "Neohio Busse Boys" moniker. :p

as long as we don't take ourselves too seriously........

but I did kinda like the alliteration of the "Neohio Busse Boys" moniker. :p
:p You declined the office of Prez!
There for, as the very unofficial not-Prez I am calling us the knife scouts!
The next time we meet up in the woods, you can start calling us whatever you want! How's that for serious? ;)
(LOL..... We're now on a rotating knife club name schedule!)
What's next........ GASP ......... T-shirts! Key chains! Coffee Cups!

We need to have one of these up in Ontario some time (Canada that is) ...

Okay, Scouts......
Joe has opened up the possibility of going into the open forest behind his brother in law's house after a meeting at his house. We could and barbecue and hang out, rather than go to a restaurant. Or maybe we'll just meet there and party and chop wood and roast weenies and potato salad.
BUT WE NEED YOUR INPUT! Joe, chime in and let people know what you prefer.
If don't get too many people, I vote we just go to the restaurant. If we get 5 or 6 or more, then we should probably just meet up at the woods, but again, it's up to the guys. I is just little old me!

24 hour bump! No more 'knife scouts', back to a Chop-In...contests, prizes, and most of all...

INFI!!!!!!!!

11:00am start time...

GET YOUR CHOP ON :)

Had a great time seeing everyone again. Lots of fun doing the contests...even more fun winning a custom knife!
Great times

Had a great time guys glad you all could come. I'll admit it first, man is my arm sore!! Some pics to follow, got dial up and its a little slow. Guy won! Chuck was second, I was third, Ed brought up the rear. Wait til next year bigger, better, and lots of fun for the whole family.

I may have been second, but I used a Busse and gave up blade length...Is that a 10" or 12" blade on that custom, Guy?
My right shoulder has a good soreness to it :)
Oh, and kudos to Joe for a great event, and supplying the prizes... THANKS JOE!

Thanks to Walking Man (Ed) and joesouth for organizing this event, and especialy to Joe for hosting us and giving the nickel tour of his shop. Joe is a part-time maker, doing both stock removal and forging. You can see one of his knives here:

I really enjoyed seeing his shop, the home-built propane forge was quite impressive. He apparently melted a piece of re-bar while learning about soak time. Joe has learned how to stablize his own wood for scales, and has a nice collection of slabs.

As Chuck pointed out, he was the only one of us competing with a Busse, a Desert SH-E. He chose that as being sharper than his Dogfather. Ed used a honking big Peter Martin Camp Knive, in forged A2. Joe used an older Bill Siegle Camp knife. My first impression was that it might lack heft, as it was thin stock, but it sure did cut. My secret weapon was a Jim Crowell Camp/Competition blade I got off a dealers table at Blade. The dealer had a number of older Crowells, and Jim was kind enough to come over to the table and tell me a little about them. He guessed it was probably forged 1084, 15 - 18 years old, and he chuckled that it was state of the art back then. Flat ground to a zero edge. With a loupe I could see that the micro-bevel looked like one done with a grey Sharpmaker. I tuned it up a bit with 800 grit paper and then stropped it. It has a thin profile, so I was a little apprehensive after reading about JAB's edge problem at Ban's Busse Beat Down.

First up was the 2x4 chop. But this was not your cheap Home Depot softwood. Joe had taken apart a wooden skid to get some nicely grained wood out of it, and had a nice piece of clear hardwood for us to attack. Now I was more worried about the edge. As I hacking away, I'm sure I heard funny little metal stress sounds from my poor knife. :( 78 chops, in just under two minutes. That's hard work! My wrist is sore today. Edge was fine! I read a tip somewhere that you need to start your cut wider than the width of your blade, so there is room as you chop down and the cut tapers in.

btw, if you try this, you really need to devise a strong clamp system. Joe had a single bar clamp, but it would start to loosen after two minutes of action. Next time, we'll have better clamps.

Rope cut was next. 5/8 manila. We did single and double strands.

Joe and Ed had bought two cases of 20 oz water bottles. Good thing, we used up most of them. Started with 4 bottles, I think we all cleared that, then up to 6. Only Joe was able to cut all 6. This event really calls for practice and learning the proper technique.

Final event was attempting to stab floating ping-pong balls. No freakin' way! We did try to chop them on the table, that's hard enough.

Joe had generously put up three of his knives as prizes, so I chose this liner-lock folder.

After all that, the Crowell was still at least hair-scraping sharp.

This was a LOT of fun, and not that hard to set up. Kudos to Ed and Joe for putting this on.:cool:

Man did I miss out!
It would have been worth the drive to swing this one a few times!!!

Looks like you guys had a great time. I am surprised that a SH-E was able to compete with the longer blades. Why didn't anyone use a FBM?

Guy,

That Crowell Competition knife looks like it has a nice thin edge. It must bite really deep into the wood. Send it over and let me pound on it some ;) It should give my FABM a good run for the money.
