OD-1? Thoughts?

Scouring the clearance aisle of a local discount store, I spied one in clampack for 30 clams.
Looked handy, and I grabbed it on a whim. Online price appears to be $39 plus shipping.
I thought I'd poll the Kershaw Mafia before I crack the blister pack.

It's a fantastic knife -- one of my favorite Kershaws. Open that blister pack and enjoy. :)

I had the little brother, the OD-2. A nice little knife, I really liked that flipper mechanism, but in the end I had other small folders that hogged all the pocket time so it went off to a good home elsewhere. If it had been the OD-1, it probably would have stayed in the collection.

I say crack that puppy open! You'll dig that flipper...

Okay.

See? It didn't take much. :D
Now that I'm home and can search easier, I find that a lot of folks have liked this little knife.
I understand why. The G-10 is good. As nicely checkered and grippy as Spyderco's. In my book, that's saying something.
Fit and finish on my OD-1 is great. Blade centers up perfectly as you can see below. The frame lock is tight and catches at just under 50%.
The knife came out of the clampack shaving hair. I may polish up the edge a bit, but it's a great working edge just as it is.
The flipper is cool. Deploys as advertised and disappears out of sight when the blade opens.
My only desire would be a lower profile in tip-up carry, but I see that the clip is oriented to cover the lock stabilizer (I think).

I'm quite happy with my first Kershaw.
Is this like a gateway knife?
Will my thoughts start to revolve around the letters ZT?
How much time before I'm a made man?
How soon will Thomas be sending me my free knife?
I have so many questions.

to answer your first question, yes, probably is. my gateway knife was a kershaw splinter. I have the od-1 as well. good little flipper, it has served me well.
to answer the second question, yes again. i started out with that splinter, and now i am waiting on my second zt to show up here in korea. i have the 0650 and the 0551.
third question. don't know how much longer honestly. i have over 13 kershaws(or have had over the last 5 years) and 2 ZT's. still not a made man! same answer for question four. at a total of 15 knives from kershaw, i still don't own any of the company and not getting free knives yet! lol!
enjoy your first kershaw. cherish it. best knife company out there. i won't buy anything else. (keep the blade dry though. you will see little rust spots appear, but those come off easily with steel wool and a tuff-cloth)

I saw a thread to that effect, but the dude was cutting open fertilizer bags.
That stuff will make anything rust.
Bead blasted finishes do rust quicker in my experience.
But on the flip side, bead blasted finishes hang onto lubricants better.
I might douse it with some mineral oil. Or maybe some CLP or Hoppes Elite.

Yes the OD1 is a gateway knife,(crazy fast flipper) Next you must get a Skyline.
My next one will be the knock out.

Yeah, the susceptibility to rust spots is the one and only negative thing I've experienced with the OD-1. I have two of them. One arrived with small rust spots on the pocket clip (no big deal -- Kershaw immediately sent me a new one at no charge). On the other, even with a coat of Tuf-Glide applied, the spine of the blade developed a few small rust spots after only a day or two of carry. But it was very easy to remove the spots with some Flitz, and the more polished surface hasn't had any rust issues since.

Yeah you're pretty much hooked now.

You'll need a Skyline next

i liked my OD1 a lot more before i got my skyline. the skyline makes the OD feel like a brick IMO.

I love my OD-1. Its definately one of my favorite folders. And as much as I love my Skyline, I think I like the OD-1 even more.

My only advice is to locktight the pivot screw, the speed at which the lever opens the knife causes the screw to come loose. The is a mod thread showing how to covert the clip to deep carry using a blow torch and a dremel.

I switched it to deeper-pocket, tip-down carry since I seldom have to fast deploy and kill ninjas.

My wife bought me one 2yrs ago and i had stopped carrying it, i recently pulled it back out and started carrying it again. Fun knife, good edge retention, will take a beating. Mine was hard to open so i did a little custom work to the detent ball, now it opens like butter but there's enough detent left to keep the blade closed.

I'm very envious of you people
I have no idea where to look for good knives in the bargain bin!

I'm going to be much poorer very soon, as I've caught the Kershaw bug too!

For an inexpensive knife the OD1 is a great little knife.
It gets lots of pocket time with me.
It came out of the box sharp as a scalpel.
You wont regret purchasing this little knife, I promise you.

I was having some issues as well so I disassembled the knife and completely polished the blade with Mother's Mag Polish. Looks great and I have not had any issues since. I also polished the blade on my Skyline.

I have an OD-I blem and an OD-II, and love them both! You got a great deal on your OD-I. I have 50 unique Kershaw model numbers currently (I have 4 duplicates), and I can't wait to afford to be able to get more! If I had my way (and could afford it), I would buy two of each so I could put one in the EDC rotation and one in the collection.

i have both...the OD-2 is the handiest letter opener i've ever used and that has been it's job since i got it years ago...

I like everything about the OD-1 in use and carry, except for the pocket clip riding a little high. My only problem is that the ones I've personally owned have all been defective in some way. One was shipped without the ball bearing detent so the blade would open in my pocket, sent it in and had the replacement's opening mechanism fail, leaving the knife useless. I know I just happened to get two of the few bad ones, and Kershaw's warranty service is always outstanding, though, so congrats on the new knife!
