Odd knife design - any thoughts appreciated

I picked up a Ka-Bar fixed blade knife, but handle was cracked and had shifted, so I removed it only to find this odd design.

Questions on why 2 small pin holes and 2 wider ones (although pins the same size).

Wouldn't 4 small ones provide better stability?

Also.

4 large holes. Not even centered or cleanly made. Larger pin hole by bolster not even centered with top smaller one

Blade is s/s and assuming it was cast rather than punched

Here's the knife I bought

And with the removed handles

Any thoughts?

Thanks

The large holes are to lighten and correct balance on the knife. The pin design is probably done to help with that also. It's just ugly because it was a cheaper knife and it was done fast.

I figured that for the large holes. It's the two stupid large pin holes that's going to make it more difficult to re-pin

Might have to speak to a few people I know about refilling those 2 holes and re-drilling them properly to fit new handles

Thanks

The oversize pin holes are probably to help in assembly. You only have two critical dimensions, where the grips meet the guard, and the distance between the smaller pin holes. The other two could be off a bit and still hold the grips on.
