Odd, Little Kershaw: Need Identification

My neighbor brought this to me in need of a sharpening. I've never seen one before, and there is not much I can tell from the markings. I'm pretty familiar with any and all production knives out there, at least from the past five years or so, but I don't know what this is or anything about it.

He said he got it for free when he bought some tools off a Snap-On truck. It's a liner lock, very well executed. Blade and handle are both thick and stout. It's probably about a 2.5 inch blade. Great lock-up, no blade play, blade is dead center in the handle. It's really well made and a stout little guy.

The markings are: Kershaw KAI 1440 Japan.

Here are the pictures:

Any info? Is there a regular production model without the gaudy handles? Blade steel? Is it an old, discontinued model?

Thanks.

That's neat. I wouldn't mind one like it!
The clip makes me wonder if it's not unique to Snap-On.

Yeah, it's nice. The liners are thick and nested like a Military, but more stout. Lock-up is perfect at about 35% with a flush line-up with the tang.

The blade looks as if its a more recent design, probably just a contract knife for snap-on

Yup I've got 2 of of those Kershaw/Snap On Chubbies! They have several different colors (camo, red, green, orange, possibly others). Cool little knife and the clip is very neat. Like others said, it's small but well made and strong.

I like the wrench feature on the clip-don't really need a wrench often but it's a nice feature nonetheless.

here are some of mine:

Only bad thing about that wrench clip is that after little use (and this has happened on 3 of mine) the screws become easily stripped and the clip comes off. Even when you tighten it up, and everything seems secure - again a few short uses later the screws become loose - makes you want to just take the clip off after a while..
