odd question about kabar leather sheaths

so, i recall hearing about cowboys in the old days surviving by eating their leather boots. bear with me a second, this is hypothetical. aside from the negligible nutritional value, is there any reason not to eat your kabar sheath in a very dire emergency? or for that matter, could you eat modern leather boots?

i'm thinking about additives and chemicals used to process the leather. i'm pretty sure you wouldn't get enough toxins in one serving but i'm half in the bag and curious.

I would guess that referred to either rawhide or naturally tanned leather, achieved without any modern chemicals - just the old-fashioned brain tanned, bark tanned, fat tanned leathers with no toxic chromium or other tanning elements used. Even with modern "veg-tanned" leathers, most of the dyes used now-a-days would be less than healthy.

MRE's don't weigh much, just saying.

yeah, but how do they taste?

i've always got snacks squirrelled away. i'm a dad, and i don't like to deal with cranky wee'uns with low blood sugar.

don't worry about me. my sheaths are not / were not part of my emergency diet plan.

Well...how did it taste?

In all seriousness, I would highly recommend not eating your sheath. You are correct in that there are additives used when producing the sheaths. Not sure what would happen to you, but certain you would not want to find out. There are better parts of the cow to consume.
