Ok, heres my deal. I make knives in my garage and I also have to keep the car in there. I got a great workbench (for my purposes and space) thats 4' wide. This will be the only tabletop workspace I will have for a little while (more floor space but not table top).

On the benchtop I will need to use my coote (16" squared), 6x48/9" grinder, drill press, riveter ect... I have the grinders and such on wood platforms that I can easily clamp to the benchtop securing them while I work, then I unclamp them and put them back (slow I know).

So I can mount any 2 machines/devices at a time with 3 clamps each if I leave both sides of the workbench clear. Problem is, I need to mount my vise here to. I have always mounted vises on the outer edge/corner area of my benches so as to give them more flexibility and like haveing them there. My right side (facing the bench) must be clear to mount the coote so the 10" wheel is over the edge. That leaves the left side and dead center for the vise.

Dead center seems like it would be nice for sitting at a bench and filing on a spine with the knife in the vise but then I will always have the dang vise in the middle of my table. If I mount the vise on the left then I have to make due with 2 clamps on one side of a tool and I wouldnt want to do that with alot of things.

Figured I would ask some advice as I dont want to drill 2 sets of bolt holes through the 1 1/2 inch hardwood top. What would you do if stuck in my situation? Thanks for any advice.

you could fabricate a thing on the bench that one side of your machine's base will slide into then clamp on the other. that would allow full holding and allow your vice to stay on the corner.

Good thinking SR-matt. All my stuff is mounted on the same thickness wood, so that wouldnt be to hard, I was just in the garage and I think having a vise dead center on such a small bench would get on my nerves.

I use that system in the shop. The bench top has a recess of 24X18". Several tools are mounted on 24X18 plywood (including a vise, small buffers, sharpening wheels,etc.). I drop in the needed tool and go to work. The tools store under the bench on slelves.I also have a rolling cart with the same top so I can use a tool on a movable base where I need it.A couple of the bases have two tools on them. I turn the board around one way or the other depending on which tool I need to use.
