Odd thing happened to my Small 21 blade.....

Hey gents. I believe this is my first post in the CRK forum.

I recently got a small 21 as my first CRK and I love it, of course. Well last night I was cutting up a bratwurst that had some ketchup on it and it seems to have stained the blade a little bit. I find this extremely odd because I've cut up food with ketchup on it before with knives that have S30v and S35VN and nothing happened to the blades. My 21 is S35 and has some visible altering on the blade finish and it's really getting to me. I planned on using the knife and expected scratches but this is just ugly in my opinion. I'll try my best to get some pics up soon.

Has anybody else had this happened to their S35VN blades? I appreciate any help you guys can give.

Have you tried some metal polish like Flitz?

Just use some more tomato sauce to match up the finish on the rest of the blade. :D:thumbup:

Things like ketchup can be quite acid and will easily do that. You may be able to polish it off with something like flitz, it may also take something a abit more abrasive. I seem to remember another member here having problems with ketchup staining the Ti handles of a CRK as well.

covering the entire blade in Sauce actually crossed my mind.:D

I'll see if I can get my hands on some flitz and let you guys know how it turns out. I appreciate all the help.

I'd leave it if the flitz doesn't do anything. Not worth risk messing up the finish, IMO.

If you planned on it being a user, just use it and enjoy it. Character marks are memories and they all add up to tell one hell of a story. You'll look at that ketchup stain and remember exactly where you were, that's the good stuff.

Moral of the story...Ketchup should never be on brats, only spicy brown mustard!

Flitz should remove the stain.

Yeah that too! Yellow mustard is also acceptable, IMO.

I have removed small stains by just running the blade on a strop and some white compound, it should have a similar effect since it will remove some really small particules of metal, you might wanna try that.

I've never had any of my CRKs stain and I use them all. But I can't remember ever getting ketchup on them.

I'm not sure what caused it, but the blade on the Sebenza I use the most is discolored. I just don't pay any attention to it.

The real question is.... What kind of ketchup was it? :) Haha!

Try some ballisol and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes then wipe the blade down

That's funny, I raided my fridge looking for some spicy brown mustard but we were all out. I'm not a big fan of regular mustard so I just went with the ketchup. I guess that was a mistake.:D

Well, I managed to find some Turtle wax rubbing compound and it worked like a charm! My blade is just like new again and I couldn't be happier. I didn't get a chance to take a picture though. I was ecstatic when I got the compound and immediately tried it.

Glad you got it out! It's funny how just the little things bother use about our knives. But hell! We like them the way we like em!!

Damn ketchup!! :)

Who needs to cut ketchup?
;)
This is a lesson every knifeuser has to learn at one point.
Some people apply a patina to their knives by exposing them to food as mustard, tomatoes, lemons, vinegar or even cheese.

Good to hear!

Funny how blades that are the same to a finite and scientific measurements can act so differently. I've had all sorts of good and other gunk on my blades and have seen no staining, did you let the ketchup sit on the blade while you ate? Maybe you had it on the blade for a longer duration than I've let mine sit- I'm curious , thought that S30 & S35 were very stain resistant.

Thanks for sharing, I'll be cautious with mine at the next hunting trip or picnic where it may go longer before getting cleaned.

I know! If it was the handle I wouldn't have cared one bit but since it was the blade, and I hadn't gotten done admiring the beautiful grind lines, I drove me crazy. I dig scratches from wear but the stain was just hideous.

Yeah, the ketchup was on the blade the whole time I was eating which was about 6 or 7 minutes then I cleaned it. I always thought S30V and S35VN were very stain resistant, too. I've totally neglected some of my S30V blades and never saw a sign of corrosion but I guess the ketchup was acidic enough to make it's mark. It was definitely an interesting experience! I'm just glad the blade is back to it's beautiful self again.

Thanks again for your help everyone. If it wasn't for you guys I'd probably still have a stained blade.
