What is some oddball tactical gear you can think of or use? Asside from nice knives, surefire flashlights, fisher space pens, nice watches, guns, etc....what is something odd you use or think of?

Tampons - to plug bullet holes. Of course, you would need a maxi-pad to plug the exit wound;)

As I watched 'Mad Max,' I noticed that he got his hands greasy working on his car; obviously he couldn't cruise home to wash up. I now carry anit-bacterial hand cleaner and a towel in the center console of my F-150.

Hey, survival is a dirty business.

No No, the panty liners go in your cap for a sweat band. Old Drill Sergeant / Hiway patrol trick. Just don't get the ones with wings. Puts a new twist to peel and stick.

Not to mention the support panty hose - great on chilly days doing S&R, and they keep ticks and chiggers out from the waistband down.

Don't forget the unscented baby wipes for field cleanup - or Old Spice towelettes.

Small bottles of hand sanitizer are always good - jellied alcohol will disinfect scratches, and help clean up contact with somebody's body fluids.

Check Ranger Rick's books for even more stuff. These I've seen or done.

Gojo hand cleaner... for grease an grime

Leatherman... cutting down small objects while in a "tactical" ( ) setting :D

I think something like Arktis' chest rig would be nice for backpacking. It would look a little odd, but would keep all your essentials right where you could reach them on the trail. The only reason I have not tried something like that is they tend to be a little heavy and expensive for my taste. They'd also freak out my fellow hikers, but that doesn't bother me as much as the price and weight ;)

I like to carry a small pair of binoculars, but this isn't always a fun idea, so I got a Zeiss Mini Quick 5 x 10 monocular with a pocket clip for everyday carry. I also like to have a Comtech Stinger handy, or some similar toy.

I now always try to keep some sort of super-absorbent cloth/sponge in my fannypack. Some of the artificial super-absorbant artificial chamois are made of some spongy cloth material, perhaps viscose????. At the moment I am carrying a microfiber cloth by 3M. It is cheaper than the packtowel items at the outdoor sports store, well at least it is, if you count that you get more than one in the package. I got 6 in the package from Costco Item #52404.

Sure it could be used to wipe moisture off plants, to accumulate water in a survival situation, but most of my uses are more mundane. Last use, on a field trip with some school children. We got on a tram for a tour and the seat had water on it. Out came the cloth. Saved a wet, possibly stained, pants bottom. It was hot, so I am not claiming we avoided hypothermia. :)

Before this, I was stranded out on a boat, it was not especially cold, just cool, but it was windy, and I wanted to lay down on a vinyl cushion which was covered with heavy dew from the night air. I had to make do with my hands as a squeegee and finish the job with a couple of napkins. Luckily, I had my contractor's clean-up bag to tuck my legs in and a jacket for my top. :) There was an inside but it was crowded and "close."

This one is the size and more or less the appearance of a solid dish rag. It says Scotch-Brite Microfiber Cloth 3M on the front of the label. On the back, 80% polyester 20% Nylon. Visit us at www.3m.com/scotch-bite .
Trying to find the product, it appears here:
Scotch-Brite Microfiber Kitchen Cloths Cat. #9032-6
I actually went and found the packaging to type in the title. They are ivory or off-white color with colored thread borders.

I have another rag that I use for cleaning my reading glasses, computer monitors, etc., which looks like the one pictured here:

3M™ Marine High Performance Cleaning Cloth 9040, 12 in x 14 in

Mine is actually 12 x 12 inches, so this is not the exact one. I am just not willing to spend anymore time at the moment. The package I got may not be on the website. I got mine in multi-pack at Costco, and later bought a similar one at Target for my parents. The one I first bought had the pictured blue, yellow, and a dusty rose color. My assigned colors: blue for glasses, dusty rose for dusting and the monitor if it has not been used for dusting, and yellow kept pristine in a ziplock bag for CD's. I got these first. The cloth label says Scotch-Brite High Performance Cleaning Cloth 3M and on the back 85% Polyester and 15% Nylon Call 1-877-362-5684 or visit www.3m.com/scotch-brite

Since I am not supposed to use chemicals on my coated monitor i have used a damp cloth and then cleaned it with the cleaning cloth, which did remove the moisture streak. So it will pick up some moisture, it certainly removes skin oils, i.e. fingerprints and smudges, from glasses.

The kitchen cloth which I carry may pick up liquid better, don't really know, and it does also work on my glasses, as I just tried it. I did try using the kitchen cloth after taking a shower. I figured I may as well test my kit in comfort, before I really need it. The cloth dried me, wringing it out a few times, and left me feeling damp for about 5 seconds, and then I realized I was dry. Not quite like a fluffy towel, but a lot easier to carry, and can be wrung out and used again and again.
:D
